Many of these weapons were used to fight William Walker’s 1849 Invasion of California. The town of Lathrop was established in 1876 by J.D. Kearney and his father, James A. Kearney, who had purchased land in what is now called Kern County. The Kearneys developed a small sawmill and mercantile business in Lathrop before moving their operations to San Bernardino County in 1903. In 1935, the Kearneys sold their business interests to Samuel Goudreau and his son John Foulke Goudreau Jr.. It was at this time that they began manufacture of rifle barrels for local farmers as well as shotguns and pistols for sale throughout Kern County. Goudreau Firearms Manufacturing Company produced over 100 different types of rifles and shotguns between 1935-1976 inclusive. During this time period, it was also responsible for creating many firearm design features that are still popular today such as checkered stocks, hinged floorplates, Day-Glo sights, recoil reduction devices (ejectors), Surefire muzzle brakes/safeties (light triggers) and more! In 1976, Goudreau Firearms Manufacturing Company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Incorporated (Winchester). In 1979-1981, Winchester made a move away from shotgun production towards rifles which would later become known as the Model 08 rifle line. This move was motivated by concerns that traditional shotgun sales were slowing down while rifles were becoming increasingly popular due to their ease of use and lethality on target! At this time too, certain aspects associated with guns such as manufacturing techniques and parts availability had begun progressions where innovative designs became more common instead of being reserved for expensive bolt action rifles! As a result of these changes & trends within the industry at large; Winchester Incorporated became one of the leading firearms manufactures available during the late 1980s through early 1990s when handgun production ceased altogether!
