Garrity operated the store from his home on South Main Street in Lathrop before he closed it down due to health issues in 2002. Lathrop is a small city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 5,975 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Sacramento River, adjacent to Stockton and north of Modesto. The name "Lathrop" was given by Captain George Sutter in 1849 when he founded what is now Lathrop Township. Captain Sutter named his township after General John Rodgers who had destroyed a large Mexican force near Lathrop in 1846 during the Mexican–American War. In 1853, Colonel Augustus C. Bancroft established a military post at Lathrop which became known as Fort Stockton or Indian Fort Bancroft. In 1863, Lathrop's first school opened and it remains one of the few public schools in Modoc County today that has been open continuously since its establishment. Another early settler was Dolphus Bechtel who arrived from Germany with his family in 1859 and bought land west of present-day Lathrop from Jacob Gutierrez. He built a cabin and started growing crops before moving to his current home about two miles away on what is now Orchard Road around 1870. Dolphus Bechtel's son Otto also settled hereabouts and began building homes around 1880-1890s which can still be seen today along Orchard Road between Main Street and Valley Boulevard near where Interstate 5 crosses over Sacramento River just south of town limits (the original street grid). The town site straddling both banks of the Sacramento River was surveyed by Captain George Sutter during November 9th & 10th 1849 while he layover on his journey upriver from Benicia to Donner Pass; this area then included all or part of the townships (now parts of Shasta County) lying east & southward thereof Wagon Wheel Hill including Palmyra Flat Preserve lying within said grant; thence by road leading due east to Redding’s Ranch some 20 miles distant: thence by riverbank subject to inundation until reached our present location April 17th 1850 having traveled 414 rods latitude & longitude
