Lathrop was named for George Washington Lathrop. The first settler in what is now Lathrop was John Fitch who arrived on horseback in 1839. He platted and sold 600 acres (240 hectares) of land to David Starr Jordan in 1840 and built him a house on the property which remains standing today. A post office called "Lathrop" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1863, George Armstrong Custer fought at the Battle of Little Bighorn while stationed at Fort Humboldt; his unit included many men from Lathrop including Joshua Chamberlain and Lewis Carruths. In 1896, Jens Petersen started an agricultural Implement Manufacturing Company here that continues to this day as Peterson Implement Incorporated with over 100 employees manufacturing high-quality farm machinery across a variety of brands including Husqvarna, DeWalt, Halloween Horse & Cowboy tools, Caldwell lawn mowers and more! Some local landmarks include: The Masonic Lodge #2 (built 1881), The White Sands Natural Gas Pipeline Storage Facility ( Built 1961), Stonington Elementary School ( Built 1912), Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints - Monterey Branch (Built 1888).

Lathrop is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Lathrop is located on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley and is part of the Fresno-Tahoe-Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Lathrop were Native American traders who established trading posts along the river in what is today's north end of town. In 1859, José Castro and his brother Francisco founded Castroville on a large parcel of land between present day Lathrop and Cottonwood Creek. They named their settlement after General James H. Latham, commander of U.S forces during the Mexican War who had helped liberate Mexico from Spanish rule. In 1872 John Sutter sold 9 acres (3 ha) of farming land to Captain George Cranch for $2 per acre ($/ha). This began ranching operations by Captain Cranch and his family which has still thrives today with over 400 cows, 400 horses, 10 pigs, 5 heifers and 2 calves on 150 acres (60 ha). In 1882 Josephine Macklin erected an adobe house near present day East High School as her home until she moved into her current structure in 1912; it still stands as one of only two extant examples remaining from that time period in central Fresno County. Mrs. Macklin was born into a wealthy family that ranched hundreds of head of cattle during this time period out here on Rancho de las Aguas y Los Ríos de la Muerta (later called Rancho Nuevo Adobe), just east ofpresent day Lathrop center on State Route 152 Southwest corner lot #814 which later became known as Mrs. Macklin Road (). Today some remnants remain including an 8x10 foot room inside an old corral used by horse thieves when they roamed these parts back then () . The post office opened at 7:30am on November 15th 1870 under name "New Castle" with three employees: A Mr Smith (AJ), Wm Worthy & JB Webber (). It served general area for about twenty years until it relocated to Cottonwood Springs where it remained open until May 3rd 1906 when it reopened at its current location south side apoints Main Street (.pdf file)
