Lathrop, California is a small town in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population as of 2010 was 1,569. It occupies a small area in the northeast corner of Kern County and is bordered by Yucca Valley to the east, Mecca to the south, and Imperial County to the west. Lathrop is located just east of Interstate 15 on an oasis-like plateau surrounded by high mountains. The Adobe Walls National Monument surrounds most of the town while Joshua Tree National Park and Furnas Hills State Park are located nearby within eastern Kern County. Lathrop was founded by pioneers in 1879 as a trading post on what is now known as Vista Road near present day Cottonwood Canyon. Lathrop became an agricultural community after ranchers brought their herds of sheep and cattle to this region in the 1870s. The first store opened in 1881 when Jens Rasmussen built a store and Post Office at what is now Fifth Street and Tecopa Avenue. By 1888, there were 10 residents living in Lathrop with one doctor, four teachers, two businessmen (Jens Rasmussen and Rasmus Christensen), three farmers (John Ahern, Jesse Beeson, John Burt), two Italian laborers (Filippo Cesare Pesce) and one Native American Indian man named Joby who worked for Hanson Ranchrosa Chavez as a hunter/gatherer bandanna maker. The townsite was surveyed again in 1909 under supervision of General George Armstrong Custer during his Anza Expedition into southern California which discovered Mono Lake then northern Arizona Territory including today's Kern County while exploring Route 66 from Albuquerque through Los Angeles Basin In 1912 Eben Hopper organized an oil well party from Cameron Oil Field off shore ranching areas adjacent to where Lathrop now stands that penetrated over . At its peak production water level it pumped out more than 9 million barrels per day however today their wells are estimated at producing only about 2 million barrels per day A new courthouse was built by architect Harry Sternlieb between 1915-1916 following designs by local architect John Hutton which replaced earlier structures including county jail also designed by Sternlieb In 1925–1926 Roy Bean began construction on what would become known as North High School followed by similar projects at South High School before finally completing North High School sometime around 1928 or 1929 In 1933 school officials chose "LATHROP" instead of "North High School" due to lack of support from parents who desired both schools name changes together

Lathrop built the first post office in Lathrop on December 1, 1886. He also purchased the first store in the town. In 1908, he donated land to the city of Los Angeles for a park which is now called George Washington Park. In 1916, Lathrop donated money to build a school that still stands today. The town had a population of around 100 people when it was incorporated with the city of Los Angeles on November 6th, 1916. The population of Lathrop decreased over time due to various reasons such as World War II and later migration from Kern County to other parts of California. However, it has since increased again due to various businesses opened in the town during recent years such as an energy company and a software company as well as new development taking place such as an apartment complex and shopping center that are all situated within walking distance of each other. Lathrop is known for its annual Christmas Parade which takes place every year on December 8th through 10th across the street from City Hall square where it starts out at 9:00am before spilling down towards Main Street where it ends up at 12:00pm or so until finally getting back into City Hall Square for another hour or so before ending up back outside once again at 4:00pm or 5:00pm until finally being done around 7:00pm local time with plenty of time for everyone to have dinner afterwards if they wanted to!
