Larkspur, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is located about 30 miles south of Fresno and 50 miles north of Sacramento. The town began as an agricultural community named for Larkspur, England, in 1848. A school was founded there in 1852 and a post office was established in 1858. Larkspur experienced growth during World War II when the USAAF assigned it to be the home base for Airacobra bombers. In 1945, Larkspur became part of the newly created state of California when its residents voted by referendum to secede from Mexico. At that time, Larksburg had a population of only 1,500 people while Larkspur had a population of over 20,000 people. The economy has been centered around agriculture since before it became an incorporated municipality in 1912. Today, much of what makes up Larkspur's economy comes from services such as law enforcement and firefighting; however, some businesses do still exist that support agriculture including a cotton gin and two grain elevators that were renovated in 2009 and 2011 respectively. One significant event significant to Larkspur's history occurred on October 24th 1909 when country singer Gene Autry came to visit. He also made his first radio appearance here on September 27th 1913. The following year saw another large event when President William Howard Taft visited. To commemorate this occasion local officials erected two statues honoring Taft: one near Main Street and one on Highway 99 which overlooks downtown. He was part of the Gold Rush and started a store near what is now the intersection of Seventh Street and Community Avenue. In 1861 John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill which became one of the largest cotton mills in America. The mill closed in 1922 but left an lasting legacy on Larkspur with its Italianate architecture and Pisgah view from its roof garden. Larkspur also had a significant role during World War II as it served as a military airfield supplying bomber stations across Southern California with supplies for the war effort. The airfield was known as "Majestic" because it featured large trees that could be seen from miles away while at the same time providing cover for bombers flying over Nazi Germany during Operation Overlord. After World War II, Larkspur gradually lost its importance as an airfield until it was vacated by USAF troops in 1969 and closed down entirely twenty years later. Larkspur was founded on October 26, 1850 by two brothers, George and John Larkins. The town was named after the larkspur flower that grows in California. The Larkins family ran a small grocery business until 1861 when George died suddenly. John took over the store and continued to run it until 1875, when he also passed away. In 1865, Larkspur became part of the Kern County territory. On January 1, 1889, the rancho comprising present day Larkspur and parts of unincorporated areas east of Interstate 5 were sold to Hays Water Company for $1 million. In 1907, Campion & Sons winery began production at an adjacent site south of town. The first batch of Cabernet Sauvignon varietal wines were released in 1909 and 1959; these were followed by Zinfandel vines in 1961 and Chardonnay vines in 1966.
