Larkspur is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 29,821 at the 2010 census. Larkspur is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains and is bordered by[1] Riverside to the north, Fullerton to the east and south, and Glendale to the west. The first permanent settler in what would become Larkspur was Nicholas Tooke who settled in 1792. In 1824 Captain John Cranch discovered gold near present-day Larkspur while exploring for gold mines in what would become Orange County. After finding no gold but some valuable ranch land, Cranch sold his claim to Hernando De Soto for $5 per acre ($100 total). The town's first post office was established in 1827. By 1850 there were twelve businesses operating within Larkspur limits; four banks (the First National Bank of Los Angeles and six others), two schools (one public and one private), three churches (Anglican and Methodist), two sawmills (two active), two woolen mills (both being operated by J. Poulter & Sons Co.), four stores (four blacksmiths', four printers', two toll roads operators'), one hotel (the first American Hotel built in Southern California) and seventy five residents. In 1870 an act giving exclusive rights to mineral interests within San Bernardino County was passed by Congress; this law provided for a new town called Pasadena which would be adjacent to Larkspur on both sides of Mulholland Drive; also part of that town were Crescent City Park on Crescent City Boulevard east of US 101, which opened Memorial Day 1893 as a national military park named in honor of General Philip Sheridan who had died during World War I; east of Memorial Day Park was Alcala Gardens which served as an open-air shopping mall until it closed December 5th 2009 because it failed financial inspections as required by state law when developers learned about these conditions they vacated all property including over 200 stores with high demand from retail tenants such as Macy’s Inc., Sears Holdings Corporation., Disney Stores Inc., JCPenney Company., Ulta Salon & Spa, Applebee’s Restaurants Incorporated., PetSmart International INC.; Downtown #3: A building occupied since 1927 by Pacific Gas & Electric company became home for many years to [Ziggy Stardust's] Stardust Circus before it moved out after PG&E began its own circus program downtown
