Larkspur is a small town in Kern County, California, located on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The population was 1,394 at the 2010 census. Larkspur has been inhabited by Mono people and other Native Americans for over 200 years. In 1851 Mexican traders arrived in search of silver and discovered Larkspur Rancho de la Union de los Comanches de Californias ( now part of Kern County) lying on the San Joaquin River Valley near present-day Bakersfield. They named it San Bernardino because their leader, José Antonio Barranca y Pacheco, had resided there since 1781 as part of a group called Los AngelesMission District. The first permanent European settler in Larkspur was Dutchman Cornelius Beeckman who lived from 1795 to 1807 at what is now known as Southgate House. He leased land from Juan Bautista Alvarado who also owned Rancho Las Humboldt. The first post office was established at Larkspur on October 12, 1859 by A.S. Arends with Wm Gouda as his witness Arends served as postmaster until May 6, 1861 when David Sutter took office after being appointed postmaster by Governor John Goodwin Goodwin in response to an election victory of that name held December 3rd ballot day On November 10th 1863 German miner Johann Kapp found gold along several miles of road running through eastern Kern County and named it "Kernberg" after his employer while others followed suit including Arnold Klingelbach who placerized some sixty five miles east of Kingsville just south of today's Pershing City Emmett Jolin started mining lode copper nearby at what is now Redlands on January 26th 1865 but stopped when he ran out of water Agrarian values were dominant early on with most families owning one or two herds yielding produce such as hay, cattle and beans which would be transported back home to sell or process into flour, soap and other manufactures In 1870 James Earle bought adobe house east of today's Main Street for $550 which became known as "the Earles Adobe". It still stands today next door to the old Kearsarge Post Office

Larkspur is a small community in southeastern Riverside County, California, United States. It was founded in 1887 by James H. Lark and his wife Jennie A. (née Satterfield). The town was named for the larkspur poppy, which is native to the area. The population of Larkspur was 1,332 at the 2010 census. The first store in Larkspur opened on Main Street in 1887. The original post office was established in 1888 and closed in 1906. In 1912, Larkspur incorporated as a city with a population of 561 people. Larkspur has two high schools: Los Angeles High School and Riverside Community College–Larkspur Campus. Other schools include Stonington Elementary School and North Hollywood Middle School which serve students from east central Riverside County; and Orchard Park Elementary School serving students from west central Riverside County
Larkspur was founded in 1849 by Captain William S. Porter as a small town on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The name derived from the unique lark or kites that frequent the area. Larkspur rapidly grew into a thriving commercial center, and during its early years it adherents to many different religious denominations. In 1872, Larkspur became an independent city, and soon after diversified its economy with businesses in lumber, cattle ranching, and shipping. The city experienced rapid growth during the 1930s when World War II brought new industries such as aircraft manufacturing and printing presses to Larkspur. However, during the 1960s and 1970s Larkspur struggled with economic decline and crime rates which led to some political instability. In recent years, however, Larkspur has seen significant growth thanks to its important role within the agricultural sector; in 2013 it emerged as one of California's top five agricultural counties. Additionally, there are now several high-profile cultural attractions located within downtown Larkspur including Theater at First Avenue and throttle alley (a recreated English Renaissance gas chamber), which opened in 2017; art galleries like Happenstance Gallery & Studio;and breweries like Sixpoint Brewery and Green Flash Brewing Company
