In 1846, Larkspur was founded by Captain John C. Frémont and his men as a small community on the banks of the San Joaquin River. By 1872, Larkspur had grown to an agricultural town with over 1,000 residents. The town’s economy was based on grazing land and raising livestock. In 1907, the population of Larkspur increased to 6,500 when it annexed part of the city of Fresno. Larkspur experienced significant growth in the 1920s and 1930s as a result of World War II. The city built housing for workers who developed new industries in Larkspur such as shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing. After World War II ended, Larkspur began to decline in population but has since recovered slightly. Today, Larkspur is a small city with a strong cultural identity that reflects its history and connection to California's "cow belt."
Larkspur is a city located in Kern County, California. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 382. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area and is included in the Fresno-Madera Census Area. Larkspur was founded by prospectors on December 21, 1848 as Campo de la Luna. The name comes from Spanish for "lark's nest." The post office at Larkspur was established on February 7, 1850, and served until it closed on July 15, 1902. The first school in Larkspur was built in 1851 by Mrs. Caulfield and named Monterey Schoolhouse after her home town of Monterey, California. In 1852 Mrs. Fenton erected a schoolroom and building at the corner of Third Street and Main Avenue which became known as Pioneer Female Academy. A public library was founded in 1865 by subscription with $5 per month being collected from citizens living within five miles (8 km). The first library board consisted of Messrs Wm Haggerty (president), Ira Pacheco (vice president), Geo Smedley (treasurer), Cyrus Kappe (secretary) and George Einhart (trustee). In 1896 the City Council voted to erect a new park on what is now Page Boulevard east side between Franklin Street and Harrison Street; this park became known as Larkspur Plaza Park or Fraser Park after its founder Drs John Fraser, Felix Frankfurter and Harry Kessler who were among the early donors to that project also contributing land for development purposes along with other philanthropists like Jock Mahony who donated a football field for use by local high schools; thereafter Mr. Mahony endowed an endowment fund that still supports various sports programs at nearby Banning High School including soccer, baseball & softball - all under one roof! Larkspur experienced rapid growth following World War II when many veterans returned to their homespun values while businesses opened up due to wartime production needs such as aircraft parts etc.; however during this time some aspects of life began to change becoming more commercialized including liquor stores opening up right next door where Gretsch guitars used to be sold; African Americans started working here starting out as maids then progressing into candy salesmen before eventually reaching management positions eventually leading companies like Sears Roebuck & Co.; Lurie Peake Jr., President & CEO emeritus; Cecil Blydenberry III who later took over leadership role at HP America Inc., later becoming Chairman Emeritus upon his death in 2018 - making him one of Americas longest running corporate leaders! Larkspur has seen significant growth over recent years but there are still some challenges facing the community including high unemployment rates for black residents which have led to social unrest; crime rates are relatively low but increasing awareness has led police departments like Kern County Sheriff’s Office having increased patrols especially during holiday seasons; however despite these challenges overall Larkspur continues to enjoy positive economic trends

In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell used a rifle equipped with a four-shot revolver to shoot Union soldiers dead at Bull Run Bridge. Gunfire was sporadically used in warfare until World War I when it became standard practice for artillery units to employ machine guns against infantry targets during trench warfare. From then on gunfire became an integral part of many war campaigns throughout history.
Larkspur is a census-designated place in Kern County, California. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Larkspur is located on the north bank of the Kern River about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Bakersfield. The first settlers in what would become Larkspur were persons from Redding who arrived in 1851 after traveling through what is now Nevada and Oregon. In 1865, they founded a post office at present-day Larkspur. In 1875, they incorporated as a town under the name Redding. A year later, they changed their name to Larkspur because of the abundance of larkspurs near their farmstead. By 1890, Larkspur had a school, Methodist church and two businesses: one store and one woolen mill. In 1906, citizens of nearby Banning organized themselves into a town corporation with same boundaries as that of Larkspur but with its own government and police force. When that community dissolved in 1912 due to lack of interest by its residents, Banning became an unincorporated community once again within Kern County limits until it amalgamated with Dominguez Hills in 2002

In 1858, Larkspur became part of Mexico and was removed from U.S. jurisdiction; however, it continued to be a center for trade with Asia until 1959 when it reverted to its U.S. status.
