Larkspur is a census-designated place located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,803 at the 2010 census. Larkspur is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Pasadena Metropolitan Area. The name "Larkspur" comes from an American bird called the lark. The first settlers in the area were horse thieves and robbers who used tostation themselves near Larkspur Creek in order to steal horses from their owners. In 1847, J.M. Hinkle built a post office here and named it after his native home of Larkinsburg, Pennsylvania. The town was moved to its present site in 1884 when Gold Rush miners discovered large quantities of gold on what is now known as Rancho Los Alamos National Monument (now BLM land). A post office and hotel were constructed here and the town began to grow quickly due to its rich gold deposits. By 1900, Larkspur had a population of 2,000 people and was one of the most important mining towns in California because it produced more than any other community during that time period. But with World War II looming large over America, many people left for war-time worksites all over California; Larkspur saw few residents move away until after 1945 when oil production boomed nearby and led to increased traffic on Highway 99A which bisected the town center east-west. Larkspur's history dates back to 1859 when it was named for two larks that had been found there by Colonel John C. Frémont and his party during their mapping of the Central Valley. The name "Larkspur" came from one of Frémont's possessions in the area and was applied to other places as well including Lassenville on the eastern border of Kern County and Lakeside on the western border. The first post office in Larkspur opened in 1859. It was located at what is now the corner of East Elmira Avenue and North First Street. In 1892, Larkspur incorporated as a town under state law 3rd Section 11 (§11) which granted town status to towns with a population over 10,000 who met certain requirements such as having an Arsenal or Military Armory within their limits, selling goods or services through an agency licensed by the state government, electing officials through direct vote rather than nomination by election committee members, And having a school board that meets annually to manage public education within its boundaries... In 1924–1925 General Electric built an electric plant on land near present-day Union Pacific Railroad tracks east of town along First Street between Mission Road and Cottonwood Boulevard. The plant produced power for light bulbs and radios until it closed in 1984 after GE retired from manufacturing these products worldwide. According to residents interviewed after GE's closure, memories of past operations remain strong; one resident said "We all went inside [the plant] once a day because we couldn't get out no matter how hard we tried." He added: "There were always people coming up to us asking about how things were going [...] We still have those oldGE light bulbs around here." Additionally some residents say they still remember when huge transformers used to be located just outside town limits; however since 1984 these have been replaced by small wind turbines.. Some local businesses which are still open include CVS Pharmacy (opened 1925), Chuck E Cheese's Pizza (opened 1938), Union Electric Corporation (closed 1984), Pioneer Woman Clothing Store (opened 1949), Golden Corral Mexican restaurant ( reopened 1985) and Lion's Den barber shop & salon complex (opened 1989).
