By 1893 most of these buildings had been replaced by frame structures such as Mrs. Gorman's Store No 5B which still stands today adjacent to current day Interstate 880 just past exit 71/Rancho Park Road). Larkspur is located on the banks of the Sacramento River. The town's history begins with Captain John Clift who arrived in 1868 from Philadelphia and started a ferry service between Larkspur and Redding. He also built a sawmill and gristmill around this time. In 1870, he married Eliza Luckett who came from Illinois. They started a bakery which soon became successful and opened several other businesses including an Odd Fellows Lodge that served as the town's first Post Office until 1906. Captain John Clift died in 1872 after many years of farming and ranching around Larkspur. His widow continued to run their business until her death in 1928. The business passed through multiple families before it was sold to Humboldt County residents Ernest & Florence Sutter in 1951 who operated it until 1957 when it was bought by the current owners, Chuck & Cathy O'Neill, who continue to operate it today as part of theChuck&CathyO'Neill family business empire dating back to 1968! The early days of Larkspur were very difficult due to lack of resources-the only water available for irrigation was found near Redding so farmers had to truck their crops overland distances or take advantage of Carquinez Strait crossings which were often unsafe during high water levels! However, over time natural improvements such as reservoirs have been built nearby making Larkspur one of the most prosperous towns on its riverbank! Today, Larkspur is known for its beautiful downtown core complete with restored buildings dating back to the 1800s; lovely gardens backing onto downtown; wonderful restaurants (including 4-star rated Baja Nordstrom); vibrant nightlife; excellent shopping options including top brand stores like Macy’s department store; top golf courses like Home Depot Center – right next door!!!
