Lancaster is a city in the eastern United States and the county seat of Lancaster County. It was founded on December 3, 1849, by Nathaniel Ames and his wife Elizabeth. The city had a population of 71,823 as of the 2010 census. It grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s due to its location at the junction of two wagon roads (the Pacific Railroad and the Santa Clara Valley Railway) and its position as a centers for trade with Central California. During World War II, Lancaster was an important center for arms production in California. In 1942, Lancaster became one of three cities in California to receive federal recognition as an "armament industry center." The city continued to produce weapons throughout World War II but also developed other industries such as agriculture and engineering. Today Lancaster is home to several universities including Univeristy of California–Dominguez Hills, University of California–Berkeley, La Salle University and Temple University.

Lancaster, California is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 23,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino–Riverside metropolitan area. The name Lancaster comes from the Angel's Landing Rancho on the east side of present-day Lancaster, which was granted by George Custer to his lover and business partner (and future Governor) Marcela Osburn Gillespie in 1847. Lancaster experienced rapid growth during prohibition era; it became one of the most fortified liquor towns in California. By 1923 it had annexed much of nearby Atwater Village to form its biggest municipality yet with over 100 residents and 12 businesses including movie theaters and bowling alleys. During World War II Lancaster served as an air force base housing both American and Japanese aircraft manufacturing plants within easy reach of Point Mugu Naval Air Station on Humboldt Bay; later portions were developed asElliswood Park neighborhood). In recent years Lancaster has become known for its wine production - mostly red but also white -leading to expansion into more than just retail sales outlets; today's downtown district features several restaurants/bars/nightlife venues including two Philharmonic orchestras concert halls (the first open to the public), three large shopping mall complexes (including one anchored by Macy's), plus numerous smaller stores and services along Preston Road between Main Street andwick Avenue. Although long known for its wine production, other industries have come to prominence through technology research or development partnerships with universities or other companies: pharmaceuticals manufacturer Phase III Biotech Partners Inc., software company Symantec Corporation (acquired by Oracle Corporation), semiconductor company Toshiba Corp.'s Heliosys division have all grown their presence here since 2000 when local entrepreneur Jim Ladd founded JLL Development Company LLC which has built more than 20 high-rise buildings totaling 1 million sq ft across four campuses throughout Southern California
