Lancaster, California is a city in and the county seat of Lancaster County, California, United States. The population was 726 at the 2010 census. Lancaster is located in the San Joaquin Valley on the east bank of the Sacramento River. The first settlement in what is now Lancaster County was made by farmers who moved west from Vermont in 1847. The town of Fremont was founded in 1849 by refugees from Utah Territory. In 1851, a post office called Fremont was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1919. A gold rush began to develop around Fort Kearny on the north side of the Sacramento River in 1852, which led to increased demand for water supplies and land for farming near Lancaster. A canal was built through central Lancaster to provide irrigation for fields and lumberjacks found new areas to mine gold nuggets near Stockton and other points along the riverbed. In 1863, when California became an American state, Lancaster became its capital. By 1870, however, local businesses had declined as railroads arrived and replaced transportation by boat or wagon overland; trade grew instead with nearby Stockton and Rocksville due to proximity to both cities' ports on the Sacramento River. Lancaster experienced another growth spurt during World War II as a result of military construction projects throughout Northern California including Project Seaboard (now part of US-101), which connected Los Angeles with El Sobrante County via Route 20; construction also increased housing demand due to shortages caused by wartime rationing programs; although no major battles were fought within town limits during World War II, many families relocated permanently because of air raids that occurred nightly across much of Northern California between 1942-1945

The first post office was established in 1850 at two locations nearby - one at present day Pico Boulevard and I-5 south of Lancaster Drive and another at what is now Main Street between Seventh Avenue South and Eighth Avenue North where David Folsom had an adobe building erected in 1852 as his store front). Lacking water resources at the time of its incorporation, Lancaster experienced many difficulties during its early years but it slowly grew into a prosperous town with an active economy and strong community spirit. The cotton industry started to decline around World War II but began to recover after that war; as a result, Lancaster has become an important center for trade and commerce within the San Joaquin Valley since then. The city also played an important role in helping to revive the local wine industry after Prohibition ended in 1933. In recent years, local businesses have begun to focus their attention more on tourism than traditional manufacturing orcommerce; however, this does not mean that Lancastrian growth has slowed down significantly recently - Quite the opposite! In fact, business activity has actually been growing rapidly due to increasing demand from out-of-state visitors and immigrants who are attracted by our unique history and culture!
