Lancaster is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 924 at the 2010 census. Lancaster was founded by the Donation of Land Act of 1850, which led to its name. It was incorporated as a city on February 17, 1897. Lancaster is located in the Delta region of California and is bordered by Fresno to the north and east, Merced County to the south and west, and Bakersfield to the northwest. The community that would become Lancaster was first settled on donated land near present-day Crane Road and Pascagoula Street in 1851 by John Fenton and his wife Anna Hildebrandt Fenton. The town site lay undeveloped until 1874 when Colonel George Smith purchase 640 acres (250 ha) of Rancho De Anza for $5 per acre ($100 worth of goods at that time). In 1875 Smith built an adobe store, called "Fenton's Store", on what is now Main Street. From this early business beginnings Lancaster grew into one of Southern California's most important commercial centers during the early 19th century. A new water wheel was constructed in 1876 by Alfred Calkins for £60 ($1,600 at current value). By 1888 Lancaster had 7 stores with a population of 100 residents; two businesses were organized as a single company - Grafton & Sons Hardware store (founded 1886) and Jno. Wittebrooks Emporium (1887), both operated out of what are now central business districts downtown today. In 1898 City Council approved plans to build a public library which would be open to all citizens regardless of wealth or race; it opened its doors on December 12th that year underfunded but completely successful with an attendance figure approaching 500 books/month within 2 years! In 1903 City Council approved plans for annexation by Fresno which became effective on October 1st 1906 This event marks not just how far Lancaster had come but also how much work still needed to be done before becoming one large thriving community like so many others around Northern California during those years! Today there are over 50 buildings from various eras preserved or restored within Downtown Lancaster including Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church dating back to 1889

Lancaster is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 71,827 as of the 2010 census. Lancaster has been called "The Hub of the Valley" because it is home to most of the valley's businesses and government institutions. Lancaster was founded in 1849 by George W. Armstrong and others as a town on the east side of Stockton Bay, now part of Fremont. It became an incorporated city in 1903. In 1850, Lancaster had 2 families living in 15 tents on land that later became what is now City Park; two years later there were 200 residents in 20 buildings including three churches and one school. On July 4, 1853, when Congress approved a bill creating a new line of police jurisdiction extending from Sacramento to Alameda County (present-day Hayward), Mayor Armstrong delivered an address proclaiming that "the people of Lancaster have met together to fix their own future." The first police officer was appointed on October 25th - Charles Goodyear. On December 12th 1854 at 6:00 p.m., Lancaster hosted the first post office opening in California with mail being sent from Stockton via wagon across Stockton Bay to Lancaster; this service continued until 1865 when road transportation became available through Emeryville. In 1860, citizens voted 3-2 to annex Unincorporated Contra Costa County into city limits; this annexation created an area which would eventually encompass all but one mile (one km) of present-day downtown Lancaster proper while leaving much rural territory within city limits unchanged. The original business district included downtown along Fifth Street between Market and High Streets, northwest corner lot along Western Avenue between College and Harrison streets, northeast corner lot along State Street between Center and Union streets; north side lots adjoining those for businesses located on Second Street east of Interstate 80 were also annexed during this time period although they are not currently part of downtown or any other parts of town today other than as open space near Interstate 680K exit 201A/B for motorists traveling westbound or eastbound from Livermore BART station
