Lancaster, California is a small city in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south bank of the San Joaquin River and owes its name to General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War and was wounded at Buena Vista Creek. The first post office in Lancaster County was established on December 12, 1847, by order of President George Washington. The town site was chosen because it had a deep well for water used by travelers crossing the San Joaquin River. The first settler in Lancaster County was J.D. Nichols who arrived in 1851 from Illinois with his family. In 1853 General Josiah Beecher settled near present day Fresno and took up land that would become Lancaster County. In 1856 Joshua Hinton laid out an area now called West Fallbrook which became Lancaster County's first incorporated municipality on April 14, 1860 under then Governor John Goodwin Wright%. In 1870, when gold began to be found near Wasatch Lake, prospectors formed teams and started traveling downriver to recover gold nuggets from what is now known as Old Mill Creek; they named their venture Gold rushville after one of their leaders - Hiram Bingham (1821-1907). By 1875 over 150 people had gathered around Gold rushville for mining operations that continued until 1902 when a severe drought caused many mines to close down; however some continue operation into today's days as rustling cattle or pigs production continues throughout much of central California due to lack of other options for subsistence farming during hard times
