The area that now Lancaster was first inhabited by Native Americans who called it Quapaw Hills. In 1846, Captain John C. Fremont discovered gold in this area after driving overland from Sacramento through what is now Nevada; he named the settlement for his friend General George Armstrong Custer's regiment of cavalry known as "The Santa Fe Rangers". With their discovery of gold came new settlers - some from New York City and other parts of North America. Most were men who had bought land from the natives or been given it by treaty; a few women also arrived during this time. In 1848, Lancaster became part of Yuba County when that county was created from parts of Siskiyou and Mono counties. The post office at Lancaster was established in 1850, but no mail went there until 1861 when a stagecoach service began operating between Stockton and Yuba City calling at Lancaster two times per week. In 1872–73 an act entitled "An Act To provide For The Maintenance Of A Post Office And Telegraph Line Between Stockton And Yuba City" changed the name of both townships – Lancaster to Township No. 9 (now Siskiyou Township) while White Sands became Township No: 10 (now Red Bluff Township). The first postmaster was Jno Purdy with issue dated January 1st 1872 He continued in office until May 21st 1877 when Wm H Rector took over for him with issue dated June 15th . Mr Rector served until December 31st 1879 when he resigned because his daughter married into township government after living here for several years before moving back eastward

Lancaster was founded in 1847 by George Lancaster and his brother, Benjamin Lancaster. The town was named for sister of George's wife, Elizabeth (Lancaster) Mellon. The name change to Lancaster in 1881 when the railroad arrived. It became a city in 1923.
