Lancaster, California is a small town in the southern part of San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 1,769 at the 2010 census. It is located on Lancaster Road east of Interstate 8 and north of I-5. The first people to live in what is now Lancaster were Native American traders and settlers who journeyed from central Mexico through the area in search of trade goods. The first permanent settler was Willard Richards who arrived about 1800 and named his land Lancaster after his home city in England. By 1851, there were fifty families living in Lancaster with a total population of 460. In 1853, the Mexican government granted Rancho Santa Fe al Rancho Los Alamos to Hiram Cullen and James Irvine for $2,500 cash considerations only; they did not have to labor or provide any land or water resources for their rancho. In 1860, following the US Civil War, both ranchers sold their holdings back to Mexico but continued to use the name Los Alamos until it was acquired by the US Army Corps of Engineers as part of a land swap during World War II. Lancaster had its start as an agricultural community with wheat production being its mainstay until 1906 when petroleum discoveries began making Lancaster one of America's leading oil shale producers. For much of this time oil production took place off-site at several well sites around Lancaster including Westmill Beach #1 (now known asParadise shale), Beaumont Hills #2 (now known as Northshore shale), Eastridge #3 (now known as Southshore shale) and many more that are still unleased today. With new wells being drilled all along the Permian Basin coastline towards San Antonio Texas things looked good for Lancaster until 1973 when offshore drilling finally showed up on map markets again with horizontal drilling rigs hitting formations 100 feet below sea level! suddenly everything changed! hydraulic fracturing/fracking – aka fracking – became mainstream!! overnight! interest rates went sky high while companies rushed into drill new wells without considering environmental concerns which resulted in huge spills across state lines followed by lawsuits galore!!! much has been said about fracking since then but little has been done about how it’s impacting our local environment
