There is no doubt that the history of firearms in Lancaster, California dates back to at least 1853. That year, Elisha Pease and his brother Benjamin purchased a gun barrel from John C. Frick in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Peases quickly became successful farmers and traders in the area, and they were responsible for developing one of the most important aspects of Lancaster's economy - its trade with other states. In 1865, they founded the Pease Gun Barrel Company which continued to produce high-quality firearms until 1971. The first guns produced by the company were percussion cap rifles. These weapons were made initially for use in Mexico but soon found their way into American hands. In 1885, the company began producing shotguns using what was then known as an "open Bolt Action" design. This type of shotgun remained popular through much of the 20th century and was even used by Border Patrol during prohibition years. By 1907, however, open bolt action shotguns had become outmoded and were replaced by Marlin Model 1886 receivers which still remain in production today. The first post office opened in Lancaster on November 12, 1876. The present building was completed in 1903. In 1893, Lancaster became part of the City of Richmond when that town merged with Contra Costa County. The original name for Lancaster was Hercules; however, this name no longer applies to the city proper as it has been supplanted by its current name of Lancaster after its incorporation into Contra Costa County.
