Lancaster's namesake is James B. Lancaster, who served as governor of California from 1897 to 1903 and as United States Ambassador to Mexico from 1923 to 1927. Lancaster has a long history dating back to 1849 when gold was discovered there by prospectors on Rancho San Jacinto land that later became part of what is now Kern County. The town was founded on October 15, 1851 by Drs. George W. Hinkle and Elias Howe with help from local ranchers Matteson and Baca who donated land for the new townsite; it was named after James B. Lancaster, then the Calafia Mining Company's president and one of its key investors in Gold Rush America). The first post office opened in 1852, which remained in operation until 1906; during this time, it served both Lancaster and nearby mining communities such as Tomales (now Tomahawk) and Menifee (now Westville). In 1865, General John Custer arrived at Camp Arguello near present-day Arguello after his disastrous Battle of Cerro Gordo which resulted in 5 Ulysses S Grant’s Medals being awarded including one to General Custer himself! In 1861–1865 an area called "The Gables" developed around what is now Main Street between First Avenue south (now US 395) and Second Avenue north (now US 95); this area formed part of what is now downtown Lancaster; today much of "The Gables" still stands although several buildings have been replaced or demolished over time including The Post Office building which once housed the bank branch that closed down in 1955 due to union organizing efforts among banks throughout Kern County! In 1896 Governor James B. Lancaster established a school district within what would become Kern County; this school district would serve all residents regardless of residence within Kartchner County – an arrangement that continued until 1984 when county boundaries were redrawn following statehood within California! In 1902adingsthe State Legislature gave settlers east side streets included in their townsite limits as well as a water tower on Park Boulevard eastward into Tomales District; this park property currently forms part of East High School Campus!

The prohibition ordinance helped drive out many of the more popular businesses in Lancaster so that it became morea rural agricultural village with few commercial interests until the late 1990s when retail development started up again - primarily through Amazon Web Services - providing new economic opportunities for the community
