Lancaster, California is a small city in the southern reaches of Los Angeles County. Its population was 73,924 as of the 2010 census. Lancaster is located on Interstate 5 and its downtown is home to the Lancaster Arts District. The city's main economic sector is agriculture with a large cotton and corn production industry. Lancaster has a history dating back to 1849 when it was founded as an agricultural town by Squaw Valley farmers in what is now Ventura County. In 1907, Lancaster became the county seat for Los Angeles County and remained so until 1959 when Santa Monica replaced it as the county seat for all of Southern California. As a result of this change, most of Lancaster's historically Black residents moved out of the city into much more segregated communities within Los Angeles County while most white residents continued to live in the city limits. The City Council authorized annexation by Pasadena in 1913 but no action was taken because there were not enough votes to approve annexation by any other municipality at that time. A referendum approved annexing Lancaster by vote on November 3, 1923; however, incorporation did not take place until December 14, 1924 because only two-thirds of voting participants had voted by mail in support of incorporation (the deadline for voter notification had passed). The first elections held after incorporation took place on May 7, 1925; Mayor Harry Siever was reelected unopposed with over 60% of the vote tallying against him challenger John Loughlin who received less than 20%. The next year saw another successful election with Mayor Siever being reelected with 71% majority over challenger John McCloskey with just 10 percentage points difference between them according to unofficial totals from election officials days after the polls closed which gives an accuracy rate near 100%. In 1932 voters repealed Prohibition in order to become part of then newly formed United States during one stage where they ratified an ordinance giving their approval rating increased from 50 percent to 75 percent following passage through both houses without objection or debate - making Lancaster one of three cities statewide along with San Diego and mycohort town La Jolla that joined US during this period although all three eventually reverted back to prohibition status before becoming fullydry again some years later under new leaderships throughout these years . A fire destroyed most buildings within sight or reach on October 15th 1936 which effectively ended business activity for about six weeks until insurance money could be raised and rebuild began immediately using techniques still used today including full use/installation/repair/maintenanceof original materials & finishes
