Lancaster's economy is based on agriculture and served as a major center for citrus growing and ranching in southern California. The first inhabitants in what is now Lancaster were Native Americans who called the area "Manteca". In 1848, a group of Mormon settlers from Salt Lake City arrived here to build Fort Bridger. They named their new settlement Lancaster after General George Armstrong Custer's army had destroyed Fort Bridger two years earlier. A post office was established at Lancaster in 1850, and began serving the community until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1875, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill at what is now downtown Lancaster with his brother-in-law David Cowles as manager. The mill produced flour for many eastern towns and cities before it closed around 1930. Today, only some remnants of the mill remain; its waterwheel still operates inside the mill building. In 1907–08, local farmers organized the first cross-country road trip through Southern California when they set out from Lancaster on an old stagecoach route known as "The Great Road Trip." At various points along the way they sold eggs and other products from their homes to passengers travelling northward across America on railroads then under construction. On this tour participants also visited Disneyland (now Anaheim), San Francisco (now Chinatown), Las Vegas (now McCarran International Airport), Fresno (now Visalia) and Mexicali (now Tijuana). Many people who took this route later became leaders in American business or politics including Clarence Darrow; Harry Truman; Franklin D Roosevelt; Lyndon Johnson
