The first permanent settlement in what became Lakewood was made by Jedediah Smith on July 20, 1827 when he and his party of six pioneers established a camp along the upper course of the Kern River. The small town grew rapidly from its original location near present-day Pershing Road and Fourth Street to encompass all of what is now Orange County within one decade. An early fortuitous connection between Lakewood and Mission San Fernando Rey de Asís (later known as Mission Santa Fé) led to increased trade through the area which helped support growth in both settlements. The community's name comes from two sources: one being "pool" or "laken" because it stood on high ground overlooking a clear body of water; and another being "westing" or "winding up" because it followed an easy path upstream from where Pershing Road crosses Interstate 5 just east of downtown. In 1856, general James Winchester laid out a new township west of Los Angeles called Winchester Heights after himself and General John C definitivey won at Monterrey against Mexico in the Mexican–American War. This new township straddled much of what today is Orange County but saw very little development until after World War II when Route 66 came through town en route to Interstate 5 south. In 1945, developer Harry Weiser purchased land east of I-5 for use as an airport; this area eventually became Downtown Lakewood with portions annexed into other municipalities over time including North Hollywood (1965), Echo Park (1990), Walnut Creek (1996), Fountain Valley (2002). Today Downtown Lakewood remains one mile away from Interstate 5 while most residential areas are located less than two miles north off I-5 within walking or biking distance. One significant change that has occurred during recent decades in Downtown Lakewood include changes to its zoning laws which have allowed for more variety in housing types including co-ops, condos and single family homes as well as commercial development such as restaurants, banks and medical offices among others throughout downtown streetscapes making it easier for residents to find affordable places to live close by without sacrificing quality or access to basic services like schools or shopping malls enjoyed by neighboring neighborhoods like Echo Park or North Hollywood

This ban placed firearm manufacturers out of business and led to several mass shootings throughout America in 1933-1934 including John Dillinger's shootout with police at Chicago's Nicollet Mall).

However, some did come back while others moved out again over time. By 1970 only a small percentage of residents still lived in downtown Lakewood while most residents resided in areas such as mission valley or otay Mesa outside of town limits
