The name Lakewood may come from the nearby Clear Creek and Lakeshore Rivers. The first people to live here were the Ohlone who arrived in 1769 from San Francisco Bay Area. In 1847, Captains John Fife and George Vancouver explored what is now Kern County and found it uninhabited. They named it after Sir John Leland's estate on Loch Ness in Scotland, but no one knows for sure where this place actually was called! In 1853, prospectors discovered gold near what is now downtown Lakewood. This led to an influx of settlers and businesses over the next few years which turned Lakewood into a thriving town with several banks, hotels and theaters (the first being The Toltec Theater on Fairmount Avenue). On July 14, 1881, a devastating fire destroyed most of downtown Lakewood leaving only a smokestack standing as a memorial to that day's tragedy. However, within just six months of the fire causing such destruction downtown lakewood had returned to its pre-fire glory with new buildings erected including two hospitals (Lakeside Hospital & Memorial Medical Center) as well as new stores and restaurants like The Ritz-Carlton hotel which opened in 1886. One of the earliest families to settle here was Thatchers who moved from London in 1852 followed by other English families such as Clarks (1855-1927), Howells (1860-1941), Bagehot (1862-1937), Godsiffis (1864-) - all brothers - Harrimans (from New York City), Mitchelmans (from Boston) among others who made their mark on history in this community during its early days... One can still see some of these old homes today including: Mrs Howells' dairy property which she keeps up until present day; Mr Clark's store on Main Street; Mrs Mitchelman's home on Fourth Street; Dr Godsiffis' house on Sixth Street; Pemberton's Hardware store located east off Commercial Street between Third and Fourth Streets; Gorman Bros., Wetherbys & Co.'s general store located west off Commercial street between Third and Fourth Streets... Between 1880 -1920 there were 6 different churches built or changed hands here: First Methodist Episcopal Church built in 1865 by Captains John Fife & George Vancouver Second Methodist Episcopal Church built by Captain John Fife & His Sons Third PresbyterianChurch build by Reverend JF Cooke fourth Methodist EpiscopalChurch built by Rev JF Cooke Sr., Jr.,& his sons Fifth PresbyterianChurch Built about 1909 by Rev H C Bickmore Sixth PresbyterianChurch Built about 1920 byRev H C Bickmore There are also many contributing institutions such as: St Joseph’s Catholic church completed 1921 Mexican American Cemetery established 1912
