It is the second most populous city in Contra Costa County after Richmond and the ninth most populous in northern California. The downtown area is home to two of the five largest companies in Northern California: Hewlett-Packard and Oracle Corporation. The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals near present-day Lakeshore Boulevard and Interstate 880. In 1847, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on Point Reyes Hill as a military outpost guarding Mission San Francisco de Asís from other nations. The first homes were built around Second Street between Main Street and North Avenue; they were often hilly enough that builders had to build higher buildings to make room for their families' access to fresh air—a practice still common today among many Californians. By 1870–71,[10]:415 some 300 housing units had been erected along Second Street alone;[11]:315 these early Housing Authority structures survive as part of the University Village complex located adjacent to Interstate 880 just east of Town Hall Park.[12]:355 On January 1st 1870 Charles Evans Hughes donated 266 feet (75 m) wide strip mall lot at Fourth Street & Masonic Road for use as a public park including wrestling ground used during interurban days when white males over 21 could watch colored men wrestle matches outdoors without fear Of being arrested or worse...Hughes also contributed 100 feet (30 m)[13]:163 which became more important when local contractor Jno Bogan developed Interurban Heights Shopping Center directly across Fourth Street from Arlington Drive where farmers sold produce direct to consumers
