Barnard had been a clerk at Wells Fargo Bank before becoming interested in banking after witnessing how easy it was for customers to get loans without having to visit numerous branches or go through months or even weeks ofwait time just for a loan decision! He decided that he would open up his own store - called "Barnard's" - starting from scratch rather than waiting for someone else to open their store first."Lakewood incorporation date: November 12, 1888". On February 14, 1889, "the City of Lakewood incorporated under charter No. 827 granted by Gov't of California", becoming one of America's first cities with boundaries defined by railroads rather than lines drawn by settlers/politicians!
