The City of Lakewood was incorporated on November 15, 1913. Lakewood is located in southeastern San Diego County and has a total area of . Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 30,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The name "Lakewood" is from Spanish meaning "lake of the white people." The first permanent settler in what would become Lakewood was Manuel Antonio Gomez on February 14, 1829. He and his wife María de la Concepción Lopez founded a small village called Los Encinas on Rancho Laguna Seca east of present-day Interstate 5 near what is now downtown Lakewood. A Mexican land grant was made to Gomez and Lopez on November 3, 1838 which gave them ownership of 460 acres (1 km²). In 1849 they sold their holdings back to Mexico for $6,000 cash. On July 15, 1870 two brothers – Jesse Waddell and John Hogg – founded a cattle ranch named Waddell & Hogg on Rancho Rinconada north of present day downtown Lakewood. They ran it until it was acquired by George Hearst in 1893 for $5 million dollars making him one of America's first billionaires. In 1907 Mayor James Jardine set up Shoreline Park as an open space along San Diego Bay between where Route 66 meets I-5 and shoreline property then owned by Hearst and others including prominent developer Edward Condon who built much of modern day Lakewood into its current form including many large homes currently occupied by residents or their families during its history.
