In 1881, Lakewood became a town with a population of 1,500 residents when it annexed nearby Fallbrook. A post office called Lakewood was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1907. The current name comes from Loch Wooden on the east side of Mission Bay where Stevenson first settled to establish his small farmstead. In 1923, local farmers formed the American Water Works Association to help improve water supplies for their cities and towns across California due to increasing demand from agriculture and industry in both states combined. The group purchased land around what is now downtown Lakewood to build an imported waterworks plant which served the city until 1933 when it replaced an earlier hand pump system which had been destroyed by fire years earlier

The first Europeans to visit what is now Lakewood were Spanish missionaries in 1769 who named it "Nueva Vista" (New View). The name may have been inspired by Rancho Rincon de la Laguna, which lay just east of town on the banks of the San Gabriel River. In 1846, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Lakewood and soon there was mining activity in and around town. By 1870, over fifty mines had been opened in and around town; many of these were abandoned during the Great Depression because of low yields from their claims. In 1907, City Councilwoman Jessie Archer proposed that a public cemetery be built for residents of Los Angeles County dead since 1857 when tombstones for county residents only began to be erected. Archer's plan called for a large park with a covered stadium where people could picnic, view gravesites from various neighborhoods across Los Angeles County as well as buy burial plots online or at local stores while also enjoying refreshments available during the day or evening services. The first buried person in Lakewood was Mrs. Fannie Norris on October 11th, 1907; however due to budget constraints and World War I infrastructure shortages Memorial Park Cemetery wasn't finished until 1919 In 1927 Mayor Harry Jaffe proposed that gas stations be built along Main Street between Fairmount Avenue and Beach Boulevard so motorists could fill up with gasoline before getting back onto Interstate 10 Mayor Jaffe's proposal was approved by City Councilmember Patsy Walesa and construction started on four gas stations: Alameda Avenue station (opened 1928), Canoga Avenue station (opened 1933), Lankershim Boulevard station (opened 1935), and Vine Street station (opened 1937). All these stations were demolished during the late 1960s when Interstate 10 became congested
