Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 37,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of San Diego and Orange counties. The eastern edge of Lakewood is bounded by Interstate 5 to the east and the city limits of Irvine to the west. The southern boundary of town is composed of a flats area that extends from Encinitas Creek to Lake Hodges reservoir. The first people to live in what would become Lakewood were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1769. In 1821, they built a log cabin on an island in Encinitas Creek which became known as Rancho Los Coyotes de la Laguna (later renamed Rancho Rinconada). A few years later, another group moved into Rancho Rinconada and built a larger cabin known as La Casa Blanca (later renamed Villa Park). On October 15, 1826, Juan Bautista Aguirre y Vallejo purchased 1/4 interest in Rancho Rinconada from José Francisco Pena for $150 worth of real estate land with water access south of Mission Bay for $5 per acre ($2/acre at current prices). This property would later be developed into what is now downtown Lakewood. In 1851 Joseph Nye bought part of La Casa Blanca from Aguirre y Vallejo and started building a home there which he called "Nye's House". He continued building until his death in 1893. His wife Victoria Nye continued living there until her death in 1951. After her death, the house passed through various families before it was acquired by George Ewing Jr., founder and president of NBC television network in 1950 who made it his headquarters during his time as CEO at NBCUniversal (the company today operates three networks under its NBCUniversal name): American Broadcasting Company (ABC), National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and Universal Broadcasting Corporation (UBI) before selling it to Time Warner Inc.(CNN was founded within this same organization) in 1997. The namesake of Lakewood is an intermittent stream that flows eastward through the heart of the city limits. Lakewood's origins date back to 1885 when two Indian traders named John Sutter and George Hearn purchased 640 acres (240 ha) north of what is now downtown Lakewood from Manuel Nieto for $5 per acre. They named their new land "Lakewood" after a small body of water they saw near their property on November 6, 1885. At first, there were only a few homes and businesses located within the boundaries of what is now known as downtown Lakewood; however, over time various businesses dotted throughout its core neighborhoods emerged with names such as "The Park", "The Shops", and "The Square". Over time these neighborhoods grew into sizeable communities with their own Schools, Parks, Churches and other public institutions. In 1951 it was decided that all annexed areas within City Limits would be amalgamated into one municipality under the name of Lakewood/San Diego County Municipal Services District (LDSD). On January 1st 1952 this happened with all business establishments inside City Limits being closed down along with any residents therein until further notice as LDSD overnight unloaded goods onto local streets without any warning or announcement to anyone living therein. All services which had been provided by individual businesses owners within City Limits were suddenly turned over to LDSD control while citizens who lived in annexed areas still enjoyed certain municipal rights and privileges according to their respective ordinances existing at that time such as having voting power at municipal elections etc... This abrupt change left many people feeling like they had no choice but to leave their homes behind while some felt like they had lost everything they owned including homes, jobs & investments... This was also during an economic recession where many companies have discontinued operations due to difficult competition from other states experiencing less economic instability... Lakewood is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 765 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Tioga Valley region of the San Joaquin Valley on the border of Kern and Tulare Counties. The city was founded in 1909 by two brothers, John and Harry Lakewood. Lakewood was first named after John Lakewood's family home in Dodge City, Kansas. The brothers later moved to Tuolumne County, California, and started a flour mill there that became one of the largest employers in town. In 1912, they partnered with Wirt Hickey to open a grocery store called J B Hickey & Son at Sixth and Elm Streets in downtown Lakewood. The city was incorporated on December 24, 1909. At its peak it had a population of 400 people; however by 1920 it had shrunk to 100 people due to prohibition efforts by the state government. However, lake wood still remains as one of Kern's most popular tourist destinations for skiing and snowboarding; as well as being home to many businesses that provide services such as medical care and accounting software
