Lakewood, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 82,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. The name "Lakewood" comes from nearby Mount Hope and refers to its location on the west side of Lake Hodges. The first residents of what is now Lakewood were Mexican Missionaries who built a small mission in 1821 on land that would become streets and blocks later called Sierra Vista Avenue, Sierra Gorda Avenue, and finally Westlake Avenue. In 1852, when it was incorporated as a town, it had just 8 residents; by 1860 it had more than 100. The main industry at this time was agriculture with fruit orchards and dairy farms dotting the landscape. In 1896, when the American Civil War ended and General Grant became President Ulysses S. Grant's successor, Lakewood's major development came about with the arrival of General John Custer during his campaign to cross Arizona into Mexico City through Nogales Pass: he camped near where present day Coyotes Road meets Lake Hodges Boulevard for over two weeks in October 1896 while supplies were being brought up from Fort Bliss in Texas for his march across Mexico City to victory at Pueblo (now El Paso). This event helped spur economic development around Nogales including construction of a railroad through Nogales which led to increased commerce throughout much of Southern Baja California Sur; today this corridor can be seen as Interstate 5 snakes its way through downtown Nogales After General Custer's visit there were sporadic settlement until 1907 when Waddell bought 640 acres east of Cannon Beach about five miles north of modern day Lakeshore Drive for $1 million dollars ($40 million dollars adjusted) which included what are now some of downtown areas including Main Street (northwest corner), North Park Drive (southwest corner), Waterfront Drive (east corner), Eastlake Place ( southeast corner) Waddell also donated 20 acres northwest/southeast of Main Street between present day Waterfront Drive and Eastlake Place to build what would become Springwater Ranch after driving advice from Hernando de Soto during his expedition searching for new goldfields in Northwestern New Mexico . The ranching activity here began shortly thereafter with heavy rains filling up many wells resulting in water shortages that caused lawlessness; cattle rustling also occurred due to lack thereof easy access to food sources outside ranch hands' homes evenings and weekends Gentlemen farmers used their horses power wagons drawn by mules pulling plows along irrigation channels making gardens vegetables fruit treesating raising beef fed hogs

Lakewood, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 37,927. It is the fourth most populous city in San Bernardino County and the fifth most populous city in Southern California. The name Lakewood comes from an early Spanish settlement called La Loma de las Palmas which means "the mountain of palms." After Mexican independence under Garcia y Ordonez, Mexico granted autonomy to Rancho San Gabriel and Mission San Gabriel Arcángel near present-day downtown Lakewood. At first known as Rancho Los Alamos because only men were allowed to own land there and carry out ranching operations, it changed its name to Rancho Frijoles de la Luz because one of its early settlers was José Frijoles. In 1881 Mexican soldiers burned down part of town during a skirmish with American forces; this event helped spur development in what would become Lakewood. The first white settler arrived in what is now downtown Lakewood on March 15th 1882 by wagon train from Stockton with families consisting of twenty five people: John D’Angelo (4), George Daly (6), Maria Antonia (Daly’s wife), Elizabeth Cogswell (8), Margaret Bogue(10) and ten children: Edward Everett(2), Harry Mantle(4), William Fenton(6), Clara Barton(8) and infant Jesse James Hemenway born on April 3rd1882 at 6 months old followed by Johnnie Lloyd who arrived on May 10th 1882 On July 1st 1886 Wm Kappner opened up his general store at corner of 17th Street & Central Avenue which became the nucleus for future business opportunities In 1889 Jens Hansen started making ice cream which later became Hansen's Coffee Shop By 1893 there were 12 small businesses operating along Main Street with 1 grocery store operated by Simeon Sikes and 2 meat markets operated by A.Lander & Company
