Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It borders the city of Carlsbad and the county of Orange to the east and north, respectively. The city was founded in 1879 by early American settlers, primarily from New England. The first knife ever made in Lakewood was an adaption of a European dagger with a hilt made from an oak tree found near the city limits. At that time, there were no known laws or regulations governing knives and so anyone who felt confident making their own blade had little fear of being arrested or worse. One of Lakewood's earliest mayors, William Hylan (1865-1942), also helped promote knife use as a means for personal defense within his community and began storingillegal firearms outside his home which he then used as part of his personal arsenal for self-defense when needed. In 1922, City Park was transferred to the city limits of San Diego and Lakewood became an annexed part of that city. Lakewood is home to many fine institutions including The University of California at Davis (UCD), The Consulate General of Canada (CCF), and The Hatch Museum cum Library System. The Hetch Hetchy Dam forms much of downtown's east border with Lakewood while also forming much of its water supply; this has led to some controversies over how best to handle flood control issues around the dam footprint

Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 54,291 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Carlsbad–San Marcos metropolitan area. Lakewood was founded in 1879 by John Sutter and James Irvine as a small community on the southern bank of Mission Bay which became known as "The Promised Land". The town grew rapidly and by 1892 it had 6,000 residents. In 1916, Lakewood merged with other nearby towns to form the new City of San Diego. In 1951, Lakewood annexed portions of Ramona and Escondido to become its second city limits. On January 1, 1957, all of Ramona and Escondido were annexed into Lakewood along with much of Carlsbad and Tecate Counties east of Interstate 5; this formed the final piece in what would be called "The Golden Triangle". On October 16, 1984, then-Mayor Burton announced that he would not seek re-election due to his wife's illness; after his death in office on December 3rd Street Park came into being as the first designated public park in Lakewood proper. Mayor Burton was succeeded by Dianne Feinstein who created one more park within her original boundaries - Donnybrook Park - before leaving office on February 11th 2006. In November 2007 Mayor Kevin Faulconer proposed that annexation proposals be considered for most of Encinitas (including parts annexed from Carlsbad) because he felt that these areas could use more development than they currently receive from city coffers. No annexation proposals were ever made but discussions continue between City Manager Rick Ladd and Faulconer about potential changes to city borders shouldencounter future growth opportunities.
