Lakewood is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 110,371 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the San Gabriel Mountains, bordered by Koreatown to the south and west, Silver Lake to the north and east, and Los Feliz to the northeast. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lakewood were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The town was named after San Francisco de la Union (now Mexico City), then under Spanish rule. In 1847 it became an independent California town, part of Rancho Cucamonga territory that extended from Santa Monica Bay to Pasadena and then into central Los Angeles County. In 1906, when Southern California left Mexican control following its victory over Mexico in the Mexican-American War, Lakewood reverted back to Mexican hands as part of Coahuila y Tejas Province. For many years it served as a ranching center for Native Americans who had lived there before white settlement began. After World War II ended however, growth accelerated due both to new housing development around Interstate 10 and growing industry within Northern California; landowner interests gradually lost access to water supplies necessary for agriculture while industry developed closer by and made use of more open space for factories than ever before. By 2000s most industries had moved out or been closed down leaving little evidence other than abandoned warehouses still standing throughout much of downtown area; some were used as storage units prior to demolition In 2003 three small businesses which operated out of two abandoned warehouses along Harbor Boulevard started receiving attention from local developers looking for large chunks of undeveloped real estate with potential mixed uses like office buildings or hotels atop them facing neighborhoods that could be commercial strips with retail tenants on one side and industrial areas on another side near major freeways running through them all together forming what would become known as Harbor Crossing; this project evolved into today’s downtown area that includes much larger complexes including one occupied by Hyatt Regency hotel next door along with various other businesses occupying former warehouse spaces On October 25th 2005 Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced plans called "Lakeshore" which aimed at redeveloping portions of Downtown Los Angeles including parts of Harbor Crossing using federal money meant for deteriorated urban infrastructure such as roads and bridges instead The initiative received criticism from many residents who felt their neighborhoods were not being considered nor did they have anything significant planned for their districts despite larger projects taking place nearby Villaraigosa responded saying "I'm not going anywhere until I see results" adding he wanted Lakeshore anchored near Metrocenter mall so people living northwest/southwest could walk or take transit there without having too far away from business centers

Lakewood was first settled in 1853 by Hiram Bingham and his family. The community name comes from the large body of water that surrounded it at the time. The city was founded on May 6, 1887 by George Hearst, who purchased a small piece of land in what is now known as Downtown Lakewood. It would take until 1912 for the city to annex all of its surrounding townships. By 1926, there were more than 1,000 residents in Lakewood. According to the 2000 census, the population of Lakewood was 107,362. During World War II, many American citizens worked in Japan during theoccupation period. Many Japanese-Americans were interned in various areas around California during this time including Lakewood. Some residents draftee their children into service during World War II and many others took up offers from businesses to provide services such as laundry and food handling for troops stationed in California. After the war ended, many people returned home and began rebuilding what had been lost due to firebombing raids conducted by America’s allies during the war years – most notably Hiroshima and Nagasaki which left considerable damage across Asia. In 1957, Lakewood became one of 17 cities located within Greater Los Angeles County when Riverside County split off from Orange County. As Greater Los Angeles grew increasingly diverse with increasing numbers of affluent Latinos and Asians moving into its neighborhoods east of downtown Los Angeles (the “ Armenian Belt”), so too didLakewood's Latino/Hispanic population grow significantly over time; however few if any local elected officials seemed interested or equipped to address this emerging demographic trend; instead they preferred to focus on issues pertaining primarily to Anglos living Downtown (and only peripherally elsewhere). This dichotomy would continue until fairly recent times when a growing number Latino/Hispanic elected officials have taken office adjacent Eastside Neighborhoods experiencing rapid gentrification spearheaded largely by entrepreneurial entrepreneurs who see opportunity here—a situation that has generated significant public outcry throughout much of LAUSD's history culminating recently with Mayor Eric Garcetti finally endorsing comprehensive zoning changes targeting these burgeoning communities should he be re-elected next year despite strong opposition from some key sectors within City Hall... In 1933, Lakewood established itself as the largest city in Orange County with a population of over 100,000 people. The city was annexed by Anaheim in 1951 and its population rose to over 150,000 by the end of the decade. In 1995, Lakewood merged with Anaheim to form one large city.
