Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 57,591 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in San Diego County and the second-largest city in Orange County after Anaheim. In terms of land area, it is larger than either Anaheim or Tustin. Lakewood was settled by Spanish colonists in 1821 as part of Rancho Cuyamaca. The name Lakewood comes from Laguna de la Paloma, which means "lake of the head of cow" because there were abundant herds of cows on the hills around what is now downtown Lakewood. The first conversions started in 1922 when Don Kress converted a two-story frame building at 5th and Grant Streets into a large storage shed that could hold up to 180 barrels of oil per day (equivalent to 50 barrels per minute).
