Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population of the city was 117,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the greater San Diego metropolitan area. Lakewood is located on the eastern edge of both San Diego and Imperial Counties and borders Escondido to the south, La Mesa to the east, Otay Mesa to the north and Carlsbad Caverns National Park to the west. The first people who moved into what is now Lakewood were Native Americans who inhabited what is now known as Rancho Coronado de las Pulgas (Spanish for "the porcupine ranch"), which was located near present day Del Mar Boulevard and E Street in 1876. They were replaced by European-American settlers in 1881 when William Hite purchased one million acres (4 square miles) of Rancho Coronado land from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $2 per acre ($10 per kilometer). In 1888, Hite sold another million acres (4 square miles) to Edwin Drake for $3 per acre ($12 per kilometer). The town of Lakeside was platted on December 10, 1889 along with much of southeastern San Diego County by Waddell Donoho under patent #81101. In 1907, Jens Gjerde started a small grocery store on East Broadway in downtown: it became one of only a few grocery stores open during World War II because there wasn't any wartime rationing available at that time. On July 16, 1912 a fire destroyed most of downtown after an exploding gas can caught fire; it cost $1 million to rebuild due to damage done to other buildings throughout town including churches and schools which lost windows, doors or entire walls due to heat and smoke exposure. In 1933–1934 architect John Leland designed two new civic centers – one near Belle Isle Boulevard and One Hundred Thirty Fourth Street east of Interstate 5 – which remain today as part of Downtown Lakewood's landscape . He also designed several residences including Vista Verde Resort & Spa on Magellan Drive northeast of I-5 and Chipperfield Court off Euclid Avenue in central Westlake village across from City Hall facing south towards Point Loma National Monument

The first theater opened in Lakewood in 1907. In 1916, the town became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and a council of five residents. In 1932, the townsite was renamed after General Douglas MacArthur while still being under military jurisdiction subject to military regulations that applied to all municipalities within California at that time.
