Lakewood is a town located in Kern County, California. The population was 24,812 at the 2010 census. The current form of town was created when portions of rural Kern County were annexed into Los Angeles County during the 1960s as part of Operation Grease Line - an effort to improve transportation links between LA city areas centralised around Downtown Los Angeles and outlying peripheral communities such as Rancho Palos Verdes Estates, Lancaster Park/UCLA Medical Center, Compton Hills/Montebello Hills/North Hollywood etc..
