What started out as just a few small shops quickly grew into a bustling community complete with its own shopping mall, restaurants and nightlife options – not to mention plenty of opportunity for locals to make connections with each other on a daily basis! Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 27,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lakewood were Spanish explorers in 1542 during their exploration of Southern California. A mission was founded in 1769 by Franciscan friars near present-day Lakeside Park and it continued to be used until 1821 when it closed due to low enrollment. In 1853, Fronteras Gold Mines was discovered in what is now downtown Lakewood and soon became one of the most important gold rushes of the era because its location made it an ideal place for mining operations. The discovery spurred development around the lakeside park area that includes present-day downtown, Central Avenue and much of today's northwestern side including Lakeshore Drive and Harbor Boulevard. For years after the mines dried up, residents were dependent on agriculture as their primary source of income while mining took away much needed land for farming. During World War II, Lakewood played a significant role as an airfield supplying munitions to allied forces fighting in Asia as well as providing housing for troops stationed there. In 1945, following Japan's surrender and her surrendering cities throughout Asia, many abandoned Japanese military installations were looted or burned by Allied forces before being turned into urban parks known collectively as "Tokyo Wasteland." One such site was Nojojo Road which ran along its eastern edge from central lakewood towards El Cajon Hills until it crossed Valley View Road just east of Interstate 5; this route served concurrently as both border between American-controlled Japan proper (now Omotesando) and Japanese controlled areas east of I-5 withinJapanese territory administered under U.S jurisdiction including portions now constituting Rancho Santa Fe National Monument located adjacent to today’s city limits (east side), south side west of US 101 north/southwest corner then continuation down Valley View Rd., crossing onto US 101W near current day intersection with US 9W near Elk Grove Village also within Mexican territorial boundaries administered under U.S jurisdiction prior to 1920 when these lands came under Mexican sovereignty
