Lakewood is a city located in San Diego County, California, within the borders of the University of California at Davis. The population was 131,821 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana-San Bernardino, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area and forms a core district with similar demographics to that of Riverside and El Cajon. The first settlement in what is now Lakewood was made up of families who arrived on horseback from Rancho La Brea near present day Thousand Oaks sometime after 1848. They began farming land around what would become downtown Lakewood and built homes during the late 19th century. Many early pioneers were men such as George Higginson and Hiram Jenson who came to work on the railroad nearby or founded businesses in town including Wernham’s store which still stands today. In 1902, Mayor William McKinley dedicated a park in honor of General John Pershing who had died two years earlier in an automobile accident near Mission Valley. The park became known as Pershing Park and still contains some remnants from his visit including a monument commemorating his service there along with wagons used by his troops during World War I. In 1906, voters approved putting lakeside housing developments east of Center Street into effect under then City Manager Harry Pritchard's plan which called for increasing density across all downtown areas while maintaining open space between those areas for public use including recreation facilities such as ball fields, beaches (now called Harbor Beach), tennis courts and fishing piers etcetera. At that time lakefront properties were generally zoned for single family residences while those on shoreline property were zoned for apartments or other commercial uses such as warehouses or manufacturing plants etcetera until recently when they have been rezoned back to their original residential zoning status again subjecting only to occasional special events like concerts or fireworks shows being allowed off shore rather than having to go through an entire rezoning process each time something like this occurs especially since most inland districts are rezoned every 10 years instead of every 5 years like beach districts are so often rezoned Today's Lakewood is constituted by its original core area bounded by East Center Street on the north; Harbor Beach Boulevard on the south; Eastlake Drive onthe west; Interstate 15 on four sides (north-south: I-5 & Harbor Beach Blvd., east-west: I-15 & Eastlake Drive) ; South Bay Estuary Naval Base – homeport/area where US Navy ships dock during peacetime – encompasses much less water area than it did when it first took shape about 1900 Please see map below contiguous with current day Downtown Lakewood - taken from GoogleMaps timeline

The town quickly grew and soon became an agricultural center with a large population of citrus fruit farmers. In 1903, Lakewood hosted the first annual indoor world championship track meet, which remains its largest event to this day. In 1956, Lakewood became an incorporated city and began to develop into a bedroom community for Los Angeles County. However, economic problems and lack of infrastructure have led to droves of residents moving out over the years, leaving little left of what once was one of California's most vibrant cities.
