SPR's growth halted during the 1970s as deregulation increased fares, travel times across state lines and private competition undermined network reliability. Lakewood, California is a small city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It was founded in 1907 by Charles Fenton and his family. Lakewood's name comes from the nearby Mount Pleasant ridge which forms its eastern border. The original town site was on the east bank of the bay and consisted of just a few blocks of land. In 1912, Fenton purchased what is now known as North Side Avenue from local farmers for $1,000. Over time, other families moved to Lakewood and it grew into a busy community with over 60 businesses and homes by 1920. After the war ended, lake wood continued to grow as an agricultural center with a population of over 100 people in 1960. However, economic hardships began to set in during the 1970s as oil prices rose and companies left for elsewhere in California or outside America altogether. By 1990, only 10% of residents still lived within walking distance of their jobs while almost all businesses had closed or relocated since 1980. In recent decades, however,Lakewood has experienced some resurgence with several new businesses starting up along North Side Avenue including art galleries (including One Green Building), restaurants (including Perennial) and small businesses such as florists and hair salons. In addition, there have been numerous events held throughout town such as music festivals and pumpkin picking tours that have brought new life to downtown areas around town which were once derelict areas at this point. With these changes comes increased development pressure on existing neighborhoods which often result in conflict between developers/businesses who want more space while Tidewater Park remains an important green space for locals & visitors alike
