Today, Lakewood is an ethnically diverse community with a rich history that is often forgotten or undervalued. The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were Native American traders and their dogs who traveled the nearby Kern River Valley searching for water sources. The area around today's town was first settled by Mexicans in 1836 as part of Rancho Cucamonga County. By 1850, there were over 100 Mexican families living here. In 1876, Mormon pioneers arrived in search of new land to settle after they were expelled from Utah's Salt Lake City following an unsuccessful attempt to build a temple there. After months of travel, they reached what is now northeastern San Bernardino County on January 14th, 1877. They named their new settlement after President George Washington Carver who had visited them earlier that year on his way to visit his father-in-law at Independence Rock near Sacramento (now Carson City). The town quickly developed into a thriving agricultural center due to its plentiful rainfall and fertile soil. Many businesses started up here such as Wernham Hogg & Co., which manufactured fertilizer; Folsom Brothers Grain Company; and Pemberton Drug Company among others. In 1915, when Lakeside Heights adjacent to downtown began to develop as a result of joiner's trade shows being held at the local high school which attracted attention from developers all over Southern California, Lakewood was renamed "Lakewood" with Mayor Jens Hansen serving as its first mayoralty holder During World War II, many jobs were available here because of LACMA's wartime expansion Program which created numerous sites across Northern California for military housing developments including #8 Garden Grove Avenue where later Hertz Rent-A-Car operated until 1996 In 1951, when Los Angeles annexed much of San Bernardino County including parts of neighboring Riverside County (which included Lakewood), lake wood became annexation territory making it one step closer towards full city status but ultimately it remained an unincorporated neighborhood within LA until 1978 when it finally became incorporated intoLA . Currently it remains classified as an Existing Neighborhood within LA .
