Seltzer named his new community after his friend Cornelius Vanderbilt who had donated land for it at Belvedere Park east of downtown Los Angeles. In 1865–66, Lakewood became part of the newly formed City of Los Angeles when it was separated from Old Pasadena. That same year saw the opening of what is now CenturyLink Field stadium; also that year saw construction begin on what would become City Hall across First Street from Seltzers' original cabin site. The city's population reached 100,000 residents by 1870; within 10 years it had grown to more than 150,000 people and by 1910 had become one of Los Angeles County's largest cities with a population exceeding 250,000 people. In 1916 Mayor John Fife ordered all businesses closed because there was no money left to provide lighting or street cleaning; this led to calls for prohibition but Fife refused because liquor sales were still allowed under state law at that time
