The first mayor was John Ives and later Hiram Johnson served as Mayor from 1912 to 1916 when Leland Stanford took office as President of Cal Poly Pomona Universities trustee which included Lakewood within his portfolio making Lakewood an officially incorporated university town with full voting rights at that time (university towns were first granted this power in 1906). Prior to World War II, many businesses closed due to war-time restrictions on trade with Japan so much so that only two streets remained unchanged - Main Street and Flower Street - after the war when most businesses reopened including one post office that continued operations until 1979 despite closing during prohibition years because there was no legal way for liquor sales inside school walls other than through vending machines . "In 1893 George W Hite opened what became known as “Hite’s Chinese Restaurant” where he cooked cuisine typical of China before open air seating began becoming popular." He also operated “Wright’s grocery store” next door which closed around 1907 however Wright still has his stone plaque still standing today commemorating this event

Lakewood is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 14,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Santa Ana– Pomona Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Lakewood was Lorenzo Dominguez in 1846. A post office called Lakeside was established in 1851, and became a town in 1865. The name Lakewood came from when settlers could see the water clear on highgrounds to the east of town. The city began as a farming community with cattle and horses grazing on the open range that now includes much of downtown and most of its commercial districts. By 1899, however, it had become one of Southern California's leading industrial cities with an output of $2 million annually ($100 million today). Steel production kicked off here in 1903 when General Electric leased land near present-day West Covina for a steel plant that would become one of the largest and most successful steel plants ever built outside Detroit and Chicago. In 1933, GE merged with American Telephone & Telegraph Company to form American Telephone & Telegraph Company (ATT). At this point Lakewood had become one of ATT's satellite towns across Orange County including Irvine (then known as Birdland) and Laguna Beach (now Huntington Beach). After World War II, industry declined but real estate development exploded thanks to suburbanization by residents looking for cheaper housing than found anywhere else within commuting distance from Los Angeles or San Francisco Bay Area jobs. This trend accelerated after deregulation following the 1987 stock market crash which caused job loss throughout much of North America resulting in increased demand for housing near metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and Phoenix etc., driving prices up ever higher until they reached levels not seen since before World War II even if there were less available jobs due to technological change - bringing about what has come to be known as "theGreat Housing Bust." In recent years some restaurateurs have taken advantage of new zoning laws allowing them more flexibility while still catering to customers who want local food products like fresh produce rather than processed foods brought into suburbia chiefly because they can find these products closer to home without having to leave their neighborhoods which has helped revive some lost businesses along with giving people another alternative besides freeway access
