Lakewood is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. It was established in 1887 and named for Lakewood, New York City. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. The first European to enter what is now Kern County was José Joaquin Cabeza de Vaca on July 24, 1776. He sighted Mount Diablo from his journey up the San Joaquin Valley and decided to make his land holdings here. For many years it served as a site for stockades and other military fortifications by General Antonio López de Santa Anna during the Mexican–American War of 1846-1848. In 1887, J. P. Morgan bought some land east of Lakewood from Sanchez and others who had donated it to the town site as part of a deal that allowed him to purchase Rancho Rinconada adjacent to present day Los Angeles County for $10 million dollars (equivalent to $). In 1912 he sold most of this land north of Lakeshore Boulevard (now Diamond Bar Boulevard) which became known as North Hollywood – including what is now downtown Lakewood – back to Sanchez and his heirs for $2 million dollars ($20 million today). In 1926 local resident Roy Kapp recommended that city officials rename the new town "Lakewood" after Roy Cohn's father-in-law Charles Sontag's hometown in Germany which had been renamed "Warnemünde". Cohn liked this name because it sounded like something clean and fresh like water would flow through a tree or fountain there instead of being called "the old west." As time went on various businesses located near lakefront such as Sears & Roebuck opened their stores next door to each other but still kept their doors open so customers could see the beautiful water view from their windows! Eventually development led people away from living near water and Shoreline Drive became an expressway making access difficult if not impossible for most people much less small towns with little hope of ever becoming high fashion destinations such as Beverly Hills or Westlake Village! Today remnants can be seen scattered around town center including a few trees growing along shoreline drive just past where State Route 137 meets Interstate 10

In 1906, the city annexed part of Oakland into Lakewood; this annexation made Lakewood one of the largest cities in Oakland. In 1926, when it merged with Emeryville, Lakewood became one of the first cities in California to have an all-girl high school (later renamed girls-only Emeryville High School). In 1970, after merging with Richmond City and then other nearby municipalities, Lakewood became an incorporated city.
