Lakewood, California is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,823. The city is located in the north-central corner of San Luis Obispo County and is bordered by Lake Cachuma to the east and south, Tulare to the north-west, and Arroyo Seco to the west. Lakewood was founded in 1872 as an agricultural center on a small stream called Genoa Creek. It grew rapidly during World War I because of its location on military ranches that were used for training troops. In 1925, the first high school was built in town; it was named after Mrs. Ayer Merryweather from nearby Siskiyou Heights (now part of Pasadena). At that time there were just 10 families living in town limits combined with 5 villages within easy distance including Morro Bay and Pismo Beach which also formed part of that early growth. The town's first fire department came into being that year when a group of men from nearby Needles formed a volunteer group to operate the Engine House on Main Street. From 1912 to 1916, Lakewood had its own newspaper, "The Lakewood News". In 1916, when mining operations ceased along with World War I, most of what is now downtown Lakewood developed as retail stores and businesses line Sixth Street between Academy Boulevard and Katella Avenue. One hundred years after John Sutter founded Rancho La Brea Tar Pits Copper Mine here he still rests within walking distance of his namesake township (the City limits are just south of Academy Boulevard). In 1955-1957 both halves of Interstate 5 were realigned through Kern County which caused much development northward including many shopping centers near Interstate 5 Exit 123B including one known as "The Marketplace" which housed Sears & Roebuck until it closed down in 1984; this large open space includes much pre-Kern Valley development before industry took over etc., but it also has several restaurants/bars major retailers like Safeway/Giant Eagle exited leaving behind an empty lot surrounded by high-end housing developments etc., making this one interesting place to watch redevelopment take place!
