Lake Forest is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the LA metropolitan area. Lake Forest is east of downtown Los Angeles on some of the city's most wooded and hilly land. The first permanent settler in what would become Lake Forest was David Coleman in 1847. In 1850, John Hargrave settled here with his family after being discharged from The Umpqua Regiment during the American Civil War. A year later, Captain George Wright built a sawmill on the then- named creek which still operates today as Wright Sawmill & Mill Complex Inc., one of several small mills that supported early Lake Forest economy including flouring for local breadths Pabst beer and Nestle milk products; also numerous dye plants were established in this time period across town - many of which still operate to this day. In 1872, Julius Rosenwald purchased much of what would become today's Ravenswood Estate and began developing it into a large white elephant housing development called "Rosenwald Park". The estate included four blocks long by two blocks wide with an open lawn per block down to Grand Avenue separating each block bounded by Westlake Boulevard on the north side and Lankershim Boulevard on the south side. After years of effort by Rosenwald and his associates (many associated with Guggenheim brothers Hermann and Maurice) development stalled due to lack of interest or financing from either investors or public officials, Rosenwald sold his holdings to Samuel Kress in 1902 for $5 million dollars ($102 million adjusted current value). Kress made use of elements such as high density living quarters for workers compounds instead of single-family homes as had been envisioned by Rosenwald – leading eventually to what are now known as Koreatowns throughout Southern California suburbs dating back over 100 years%. Lake Forest is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Fernando Valley near Hollywood and adjacent to Beverly Hills. The first people to live in what is now Lake Forest were the Tongva Indians who came from Southern California around 1820. They built a small village near today's intersection of Highland Boulevard and Westchester Drive. A group of Spanish missionaries founded Mission Santa Catalina de las Americas (later renamed Santa Clara) in 1776, on land that later became part of Rancho La Brea. In 1851, Alvarado sold 8 acres (3 hectares) of this property to James Pemberton for $5,000 Pemberton started building Hereford House in 1852 as his home until his death in 1865. His widow Mary moved into Hereford House with her sons George and Alfred Pemberton and their families during the 1860s when there was much growth around Los Angeles due to gold discoveries at Pierpont Ave and Larchmont Avenue. In 1870, Pemberton's brother-in-law John Caffrey bought 8 acres (3 hectares), including what is now downtown Lake Forest, for $10 per acre ($/acre). Caffrey named his new town after him – hence "Caffreytown" – but it did not take long before other developers started popping up: J.P. Morgan purchased 8 acres (3 hectares) east of downtown in 1872 for $30/acre ($/acre). Morgan began expandingowntown while also developing neighboring streets such as Vine Street which led north to Beverly Hills and south to Laurel Canyon; he also built a large garage on Olive Street just west of present day State Road 101B surrouding his properties currently occupied by The Villages residential development complex along with numerous office buildings dating back to the 1920s across various blocks between Vine and Olive Streets eastwardly from Main Street through University Avenue northwardly from State Route 101B He was followed by others over time including Edward Hirschhorn who acquired 12 acres (4 ha) northeast of downtown in 1886 for $40/acre ($/acre). Hirschhorn turned it into an open-air market called Central Market which flourished until 1906 when fire destroyed most of the business block surrounding it His son Julius used some money he made from sellingered products at Central Market profits to build one of Los Angeles' first department stores called The Minneapolis Store on Separation Boulevard northwest corner High School Lane between Vine street WEST & Maple avenue NATIONAL BANKnorthwest corner First National Bank BuildingHirschhorn Blvd., later known as North Park Drive current day Ventura Blvd . AfterHirschhorn's store burned down , another family member Samuel Ziegler took over operations at Elmira Pharmaceutical CoOp on Hyperion Way southeast corner Elysian Fields Drive former siteof Shrine Auditorium
