Lake Forest, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 34,878 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of Silicon Valley and just east of Menlo Park. It is a leading commercial center in Northern California. The name "Lake Forest" comes from two places: one was near where the city now stands and the other was on or around a large body of water known as Lake Forest Creek. When people first started settling there in 1851 they named their new town after John Quincy Adams, 3rd U.S. President and leader of the American Party who had been elected to that office in 1848. In 1876, when it became part of San Francisco, residents renamed their new city "Lake Forest". The name stuck until sometime between 1914 and 1916 when it changed again to its current form – Lake Forest City – because incorporation into San Francisco would have required an act by the state legislature which at that time did not allow cities with a population over 50,000 to be annexed into other municipalities without vote by the citizens thereof (i.e., only through referendum). Today's downtown core contains many old buildings dating back to before World War II such as what used to be called "the Works" which were then moved across Market Street from Fort Mason into what is now called "The Park". Other areas of interest include Crossroads Plaza Shopping Center where you can find major chains like Macy's and Sears as well as small independents like JCPenney and Marshall's store all within walking distance; All-American Racquetball Course nestled among trees off Interstate 280; beautiful lakeside neighborhoods such as Monterey Woods (Chevrolet), Highlands Ranch (Nissan Maxima), Lakeshore Estates (Pontiac) and much more; Calaveras National Wildlife Refuge - home to several thousand migratory birds including bald eagles - just south of town limits; numerous parks including Coyote Hills Golf Course/ Recreation Area which offers excellent views of Santa Clara Valley but also has several playgrounds, tennis courts etc.; various restaurants located throughout town center such as Starbucks Coffee & Donuts or Red Lobster - right next door to Barnes & Noble Bookstore - giving it an almost college-like feel while still being close enough for shopping trips down Main Street or nearby Erlbaum Parking lot if desired; nightlife options abound with bars outdoors on busy streets or inside venues such as The Masquerade Ballroom or Popsicle Lounge close by if desired; Chamber Music Society Orchestra plays concerts throughout summer months at various locations around town while Starbucks provides coffee pauses during performances for audience members who may wish to take pictures/video inside; public transportation includes BART service up north past Menlo Park into Palo Alto then buses go south past Lake forest towards Stanford University until reaching Daly City southeast of town Limits If ever there was someone who embodied everything that makes Lake Forrest special it would have to be Mayor Casey Stengel since he has been Mayor twice both times he won re-election despite having no prior political experience! He took office after being removed from his previous position following allegations made against him by fellow Councilmember Lisa Bogan following her own investigation into election fraud charges contained within an email chain included within her 2009 recall campaign materials unsealed during Stengel's attempt at gaining reelection bid against Bogan

In 1849, the land that would become Lake Forest was part of a small Mexican mission known as San Antonio de Padua. Themission was abandoned in 1854 when its owner died. The following year, the United States acquired title to the mission land from the Mexican government. On July 3, 1856, President James K. Polk issued an executive order creating Rancho San Antonio de Padua which included what is now Lake Forest. The rancho was divided into parcels and sold to various families over the years until it became part of Chicago’s North Side in 1908. The first people who lived in what is now Lake Forest were Indians. They hunted game on and around the present-day golf course and there are still remnants of their culture scattered throughout the area today. As time passed and more people came to live in this area, they began crop farming and built homes. One of these early settlers was John Fenton who purchased a parcel of land east of Peebles Road in 1868. Fenton developed his farm into what is now known as Fenton Park while also working on other properties nearby such as Westchester Drive and Beltline Road. He also served as Mayor of Chicago from 1889-1893 and helped lay out streets in what is now Millennium Park before he died in 1925 at age 86 years old.
Lake Forest was first settled in 1853 by the brothers Jedediah and Joel Green, who bought land from the Native American tribe of Lassen. The Green family built a log cabin on the banks of the former Klamath River. In 1855, they married Mary Ann (née Swenson) and set up shop near what is now Lake Forest High School. Early settlers were farmers, but began to grow citrus fruits in their fields and sell wine as well. Lakeside Cemetery, which contains remains of many early pioneers, is located in the town today.
