Lake Forest is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 22,623 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. The citys namesake is Lake Forest Cemetery and it has been called America's "Second City" because of its large concentration of high-technology companies and workers. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lake Forest were members of the Spanish expedition led by Governor Alvaro de Mendoza on October 14, 1769. They arrived at what is now Point Reyes Station and named it La Honda after the trees near their encampment. In 1821 Lt Col George Cushing led an American force against Mexico in the Mexican-American War and during his march from Bolsa Chica to Monterey he passed through this area which then had only a few houses. On July 15, 1846, General José Joaquín de Arguelles ordered his army to cross Coyote Creek into California as part of Operation Dragoon under cover of darkness and surprise because Mexico had declared war on the United States over annexation of Texas by Mexico. When they reached Indian Hill (now Mount Diablo), they found no one there other than some stray animals and Indians who picked them off as they crossed Coyote Creek estimating that about 100 men including Arguelles were lost without finding any gold or cattle buried among those animals. In 1849 John Sutter discovered gold at Sutter's Fort on what are now Masonic Way and Waverly Street in downtown Livermore when he explored for prospecting equipment with two teams looking for veins running northeast from Sacramento hills northwest to Sutter's Fort during March 4th - April 6th1849; both teams returned empty handed although there were numerous claims along these vein courses totaling 2 miles wide & up to 20 feet deep where gold had been located but never exploited due to difficulties in reaching it due largely to lack of roads & better water crossings nearby& finally Captain James Connor who supervised Gold Rush diggings adjacent Mission College property near present day Livermore between January 25TH 1850 – February 3RD1851; although no strikes occurred at this location Connor estimated that more than $2 million worth assayable GOLD was struck & contains over 3000 nuggets including several hundred assays counted weighing 1/4 lb each! This event marks one major increase in economic activity around present day Livermore(&nearly simultaneous discovery by Humboldt Brothers northwest of Sacramento)

Lake Forest was founded in 1847 by John Sutter and his family as a place where they could raised their cattle. The first home built on the site was a log cabin, which is now known as the Sutter House Museum. In 1853, the Sutter brothers started to build a flour mill on the east side of town. This mill would become one of California's most important businesses and continue production until 1915. In 1863, Lake Forest became part of the newly formed city of Sacramento and was renamed after James K. Polk, President of the United States. This name change did not last long because by 1865, Lake Forest had become too crowded and noisy for Sacramento to stand up to its growing neighbor. The city moved out from behind Lake Forest and began annexation by other nearby towns. By 1870, only a small few people remained in Lake Forest while most of the buildings were either gone or being used for storage or manufacturing. By 1880, much of what is now downtown had been built including both the original mills and community hall which still stands today). In 1935, when Lake Forest received its charter from city government it became an independent incorporated village with its own police department and firefighting service. It also gained access to public transportation through local buses which helped it grow rapidly into one of Northern California's largest villages with over 2,000 residents in 1940 (it had just under 1,000 citizens in 1960). In 1961-1962 there was a referendum that asked residents if they wanted to annex into Los Angeles County; however majority voted against annexation due to fears about job loss & traffic congestion potential within LA County compared to those within our village & surrounding countryside]. As time passed more & more people grew moving away from rural/remote areas towards big cities like San Francisco (& East Palo Alto),Oakland (& Fremont) but also some people chose to stay put closer to family & friends etc.). Little did we know that this growth would lead us right back onto our ancestral land—right next door! In recent decades many new developments have sprung up around old warehouses along eastern edge of town—including several high-end residential neighborhoods complete with golf courses & tennis courts—-all taking advantage of easy access to Interstate 5 (and all without sacrificing our unique history!). In fact some might say that this Rapid Growth has actually created some challenges for us as some aspects often take precedence over other considerations (e.g., affordable housing)—a problem that we plan on addressing through various planning initiatives currently underway.] Lake Forest is located at 38°24′N 121°14′W / 38°24'N 121°14'W / -121°14'W
Lake Forest was founded by Captain James Cook in 1778. He named the area after his friend and mentor, the Earl of Sandwich. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1769. Thereafter, it became a center for trade and exploration. In 1853, about 5000 acres of this land were annexed to Sacramento County. This change left Lake Forest with just over 1500 residents at its peak. However, by 1950, population had decreased to 700 residents from 1,200 when it joined Sacramento County
