Lake Elsinore is a reservoir in Northern California that forms part of the Kern River watershed. The Kern River was named for General Pierre de La Harpe, commander of French forces in California during the Mexican-American War. The city of Kernville was founded on the site of modern day Lake Elsinore by Mexicans who discovered oil reserves there in 1864. In 1916, the United States Defense Department constructed a military airfield at nearby Dole Field to serve as a training base for American pilots during World War I. The airport and other facilities were sold to local developer Harry Hahn in 1936 and became known as Lake Elsinore Airport. In 1951, the U.S. Navy built an installation at Naval Air Station Northrop Grumman near present-day Lake Elsinore Airport to provide support for aerial refueling operations during the Korean War. The station was later renamed Naval Air Station Miramar after Major John A. Mirabeau, Commandant of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on San Diego Bay. In 1961, President John F Kennedy designated Los Angeles County as the regional seat for Southern California; however, it remained an unincorporated area until 1971 when it became incorporated into Pasadena County under then-Governor Jerry Brown's Great State Revitalization Plan. As a result of this change in ownership, downtown Los Angeles Glen Ellen was lost to development and instead grew up around Flowers Avenue and South Park Drive near Morongo Valley Regional Medical Center (MVMRC). Municipal officials decided that Lakeside Mall—a shopping center located about one mile from Glen Ellen—would be more suitable for their growing town than either Botanical Gardens or Memorial Auditorium near downtown Los Angeles; accordingly, Lakeside Mall was approved by voters in 1974 and opened six months later. Today, Lakeside Mall is one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations and is also home to several high-end retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus while also hosting various cultural events such as classical music concerts and film screenings throughout the year
