Lake Elsinore, California was formed by the merger of two smaller lakes. The first lake was called Huachuca Lake and the second was called Kern County Lake. The combined body of water became known as Lake Elsinore after its namesake, Governor Edmund G. Brownson. The first people to live in what is now California were the Ohlone tribe. They hunted and gathered food from the area around present-day Los Angeles and Orange counties until they were forced out by Spanish settlers in 1642. In 1769, Rancho San Fernando de la Paloma was granted to Carlos Antonio Aguirre y del Valle for his land grant known as Rancho Legiones Viejas (Old Legion Lands). This rancho spanned much of what is now Kern, Santa Clara, Alameda and Ventura Counties. In 1854, General Mexican War veteran John Cabeza Olivas bought Rancho San Pedro y La Jolla from Jose Maria Morelos for $5,000USD$. Olivas named his new rancho Pedernales because it resembled a hill withorns (pencils) sticking out of it. After purchasing 2,500 acres within what is now downtown Los Angeles from José Maria Morelos in 1855 and expanding his property into today’s downtown LA in 1857 he founded the city of Pasadena on part of his land grant which included most of modern Pasadena including South Park Avenue and North Park Avenue today’s Central Avenue/ Old Town Pasadena Historic District/. Aguirre also acquired lands east side of Interstate 5 near Canoga Park Canyon that forms Woodland Hills today's Arroyo Seca Road/Arroyo Seca Open Space Preserve/. In addition to this he acquired more land east side of I-5 along Redondo Beach Boulevard between Hermosa Drive & Pico Boulevard that becomes Boyle Heights today's Midwood neighborhood . Olivas envisioned a community where people would work together soil through farming while enjoying openair markets during summertime., so he built an irrigation system to help with this goal., Today many streets in Pasadena are named after him such as Olivas Street southbound between Vinegar Hill Rd./ Sylmar Ave.–and North Hollywood Blvd./Monrovia Ave.–and Olivas Drive northbound at Sepulveda Blvd./Alhambra Blvd.–and much more
Elsinore was founded in 1844 by the brothers George and Pleasant Elsinore. The town was named for the Elsinore grape, which is a variety of wine. The first post office in Elsinore was established in 1851. In 1870, the city began to incorporate as a municipality. In 1907, the city became a county seat of Kern County.
