Lake Elsinore is home to the oldest commercial ammunition manufacturing facility in the United States. The company was founded in 1871 by Samuel Winchester and opened its doors for business on July 1, 1872. Ammunition production at this site continued until 1945 when it was closed due to World War II munitions shortages. In 1948, Winchester Limited merged with Remington Rand Company to form Winchester-Remington Corporation. The company continues to produce ammunition today under the name of Remington Arms Company Inc. The history of Lake Elsinore Ammunition begins with Constable John Wilkinson’s purchase of a small arms factory in 1871. Constable Wilkinson ran the factory until his death in 1875 and his son John Wilkinson Jr. took over operations after his father’s death. At first, Constable Wilkinson produced muzzleloaders only but soon began producing Winchesters as well. By 1881, the company had produced over 130 rifles and shotguns including twelve Model 504 revolvers which were used by law enforcement agencies throughout California. In 1915, John Wilkinson sold the business to Tedd Waddell who renamed it Waddell & Co., Manufacturers of Ammunition and Firearms for Use on Game Animals (later known as Waddell Ammo). This company continued production through World War II when ammo shortages forced them to close their doors completely due to wartime rationing regulations; however, they reopened briefly during 1946 before being closed again for good that year. In 1948, Winchester Limited merged with Remington Rand Company to form Winchester-Remington Corporation which would continue production of ammunition under that name until 1984 when all products were rebranded as “Remington Arms Company Inc.?” Productively since then, RAC has manufactured rounds for both airsoft guns and real firearms across numerous product lines? The mission of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción y de las Mercedes was founded by Father Junípero Serra in 1821 and is still in operation today.
