The first store opened in 1888, and two years later, a post office was established at Laguna Woods. In 1902, Father José Gomez built a Catholic chapel at what is now Elm Street and Villa Drive in Laguna Woods; this chapel remain as one of the few physical reminders of early settlement hereabouts today. In 1915, Father Gomez donated land to create what is now University Avenue which became an upscale shopping center for residents east of I-805 called “Gomez Place” after him while also serving as an agricultural research station run by UC Riverside until its closure in 1982; during that same period too, other portions of University Avenue were developed into professional offices buildings such as those now occupied by Oracle Corporation and Intel Corp., among others. In 1967 when State Route 163 intersected SR 163 just north/west of present day SR 158 about 2 miles west from Main Street intersection; then known as Rancho Santa Fe Road until recently renamed following SB 163 designation change), this location served as both local access point for businesses servicing SR 157 just southbound between US 101 & SR 163 & access point forSR 158 northbound between US 101 & I-805 North/East from Rancho Santa Fe Rd.; thereafter known simply asSR 158 Access Rd., given its proximity to major freeways like I-805 & 805 corridor After several years hiatus due to lack Of funding but spurred on by increasing development activity centered around nearby homesites including Gateway Village (Gateway Village Center), Stonington Mostall Resort (Stonington Mall), Crowne Plaza Ballroom (Crowne Plaza Ballroom) adjacent New Star Casino properties all platted adjacent to each other along SR 158 Access Rd.- these developments resulted in increased traffic congestion emanating from dual arterials feeding Paradise Valley Shopping Center with their associated high volume commercial strip mall situated adjacent to I-805 corridor resulting in various infrastructure projects being undertaken such as widening OFR 458 Widening Rodgers Freeway between Camp Pendleton Naval Base - west sidewidening concurrent with I-805 widening concurrent with reopening Hwy 95 interchange projectPriority Highway Designation: HIGHWAY 1

Laguna Woods has many interesting stories about its history. For example, there are reports that the trees were brought over from Northern California by some pioneers who named them "the ferns of paradise." There also are stories of outlaws living here during prohibition because they could not get liquor licenses in other parts of town. Today's community came into being when developers built homes on what had been an agricultural pond near present-day Laguna Niguel Boulevard and I-5 near Indian Wells Road in 1957. The development quickly grew with people moving into new homes and businesses along Highway 5A and Interstate 805 (now known as State Route 128).
