In the early 1800s, Laguna Woods was a busy and prosperous fishing village. However, by the turn of the century, it had lost its status as a fishing village and instead became known for its shooting galleries. One of the first places to get involved in this activity was Laguna Woods Rifle and Pistol Range. This range began operating in 1892 and quickly became one of the most popular shooting ranges in California. The range was originally built on land that is now part of Laguna Woods Golf Course. In 1911, the rifle range was purchased by George Auerbach and renamed Auerbach Rifle & Pistol Range. It operated until 1968 when it was sold to PPR Corporation (Private Property Rights Company). On May 5th, 1976, PPR Corporation passed away after many years of operation at Auerbach Rifle & Pistol Range. The range continued doing business under different name until it closed its doors for good in 2000. Since its closure, Auerbach Rifle & Pistol Range has been preserved as an example of classic American gun culture. In 1865, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill, one of the earliestvineyards in Orange County. At its peak production (1910), Sutter's Mill employed 350 people and exported wine to 30 countries including England, Germany and Italy. In 1913, Sutter's Mill closed due to competition from other vineyards in the area and its closure has been cited as one reason for the growth of nearby Irvine into an agricultural center during that time period.
In 1853, Don Miguel de Alvarado y Costilla founded the mission of San Antonio de Padua on the banks of the Laguna Woods. The first European to arrive in California was José Altamirano, who landed on July 26, 1769. In 1847, two American warships were anchored at points near what is now Los Angeles when they were wrecked by a violent storm which destroyed them. This event led to the founding of Los Angeles County and made possible the exploration and settlement of this vast area.
