In 1821, Don José Nieto founded Rancho Laguna de Santa Clara on what are now known as East Mission Road and North San Fernando Road. The rancho encompassed present-day Laguna Woods and also parts of Anaheim Hills and Garden Grove. In 1828, Diego Rivera explored Laguna de Santa Clara for the Mexican government and named it after his native land Gutierrez del Lago (Guanajuato). In 1857, following California's admission into the United States as a republic, Douglas MacArthur secured Rancho Laguna from Manuel Nieto for $10 per acre ($ in ). After years of struggle with local farmers over water rights and grazing privileges, MacArthur developed the area into one of Southern California's most successful agricultural valleys. By 1899 there were over 100 farms in lagunawoods alone; by 1905 there were more than 1,000 farms throughout southern Orange County. Laguna Woods began to rise rapidly during World War I as many residents enlisted in military service or helped support agriculture while their homes were bombed or destroyed en masse outside Los Angeles by USAAF bombers during World War II. On October 20th 1943 an aerial bombardment destroyed much of downtown La Jolla killing 50 people including 15 women and children who had been playing near Market Street when Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor that morning
